Actually, I don't think your sewing area is half as bad as mine usually is. One thing I would definitely suggest is to lose the ironing board. Make a padded board and lay it on the end of the table where you have your cutting mat. Looks like that table has a drop leaf. Can you add a couple legs and make it stay up permanently? Then you can add a cart on wheels (or stack bins) and maybe your waste can under it. Losing the ironing board frees up space and you would also gain space under that table that is currently wasted. I have several of the old TV carts from thrift stores and they are wonderful. Cheap and they are low enough they fit under stuff. I currently have one with a padded board on top for ironing- but when I want to quilt a heavy quilt, I can just pull it up to my machine area to support the extra quilt weight. I made the pressing board larger to overhang, to give me more area and I can sit at it to press blocks instead of jumping up and down between the sewing and the pressing of my blocks. I once heard that a clean desk is the sign of an empty mind... Somehow I relate that theory to my sewing studio! lol

I think any type of organization has to be easily sustainable or things just go back to clutter and disarray. My favorite organization idea is to store fabric in filing cabinets. Cut hanging file folders in half along the fold. Then drape folded fabric over each file folder half and hang it in the drawer. It is so easy to pull fabric to design a quilt. But the best part if that it is sooo easy to return the folder to its slot in the drawer. Used file cabinets are readily available because businesses are going to "cloud" storage.

We just moved into a house with a six bedroom floor plan, but the builder didn't "finish" the wall between two of the rooms. This made one large room, which DH said was perfect for me. I would post a picture, but it is doubling as the guest room this week. It's a little messy, but not too much. I have a hard time working when it is too cluttered.

I had my sewing room organized a bit before Christmas so I could make some stockings, but we had a big family dinner here yesterday and I had to stash all the stuff I didn't want the kids to get into and all the mess that was laying around and now I can't even walk in it. After the Christmas decorations are down I can get things out and make room for the Go Big that DH got me for Christmas. I sometimes only clean a path to the machine but I have to clean off a table for the Go Big. Not looking forward to it.

I used to have little scrap fabric in 6 big black bags and thread in a big old metal cookie tin and big fabric here and there. And then it got worse and worse. First thing I attacked was the thread. I bought one of those peg thread hang up thingies at Joann's. Then I went back and got 3 more (one is just for cone thread). And I used those wire things that attach to an existing shelf to make sub-shelf baskets that I had lying around for the duplicates of the cone threads and the ones that didn't fit once the peg thing was full.

Then I loaded up the thread ROY G. BIV (rainbow) style. It makes me smile to look at.

Next thing I attacked was the 6 bags of tiny scraps. I passed a thrown out Kindergarten cubicle, made a U-turn and loaded it into my car. Then I bought 20 clear acrylic boxes in ea.cube and filled by color! Done and labeled.

Then I bought equiv. of my Dad's little engineering box of boxes. Mine is a modern clear acrylic type w/ little and bigger boxes. I bought one little,one big and one 1/2 &1/2 and store zillions of machine feet, q. gloves,clips etc in those labeled boxes.

Last thing I just did is cleared off 2 more contiguous bookshelves, and wrapped my fabric around comic book boards for months. This past weekend I loaded up 6 shelves w/ my q. fabric in Roy G. Biv (rainbow) order and I am starting to feel sane, plus I want to pre-cut up my now overloaded K.cubicles into 2" 3.5" and 5" squares plus 2.5" jelly rolls.

Just do one "area" at a time between projects.

That's my story too. And when I reorganize, then I forget where I put it. I do feel better when I have it organized some, but doesn't happen very often. It takes up my sewing time.

Oh that's not messy, just creative clutter :-) mine is always messy because I work on at least 2 projects all the time.
