Craft/Sewing Room - Update # 2

This is an update to my previous post: http://www.quiltingboard.com/mission...s-t170083.html. The work will start later on this week or early next week, and I've finally got the space all cleared out; there are just a few minor things left to move. The photos below show the area before work starts, and I've indicated on the photos what changes I'm making in the room.

I'm adding a new wall, with a door, to separate the furnace and the laundry area from the new room. As there will not be a lot of clearance in this new space where the washer and dryer currently are, I'm moving the W/D over to the left where there will be a larger area for me to dump laundry on the floor to sort. The furnace/laundry area will continue to be a storage area.

The existing door from the family room into the new space will remain. I'm adding a wall of closets in the new space. I'm also adding a wall of new upper and lower kitchen cabinets with a space in the middle for a chair. There will be a large cut-out in the existing wall next to the cabinet wall, where I will put a new sewing table (that I still have to shop for). The cut-out is on the same wall as the existing door to the family room and will serve two purposes: 1) It will allow me to see the TV from the new room while I'm working; and 2) I opted to cut a hole in this wall as opposed to taking the wall down entirely. This is because there is crown moulding in the existing family room and I would have had to rip it off the adjacent walls if I took down this wall. Since I didn't want to have to re-paint and re-install the crown in the family room, I decided to just cut a huge hole in the wall instead. The entire back of the house is floor to ceiling windows, and the sun shines down the basement stairs at the back and will, hopefully, extend into the new space once the hole is cut out.

In case it doesn't, I'm having 6 pot lights installed on a dimmer, as well as under-cabinet valence lighting on the kitchen cabinet wall. The cabinets will be your basic stock white. I haven't picked out the counter top yet. The room size before any work is done is about 12' x 13'. I'll lose approx. 2.5' when the closets are installed, but I'm fine with that.

I'm VERY excited about getting this construction done. I'll post updates as the work progresses.

I'm not sure why, but my photos with the notes on them didn't load, so I'm going to try again.

P.S. After uploading again, I see that the right hand side of the photos are cut off. (I would really like it if there was a way to specify the pixel width for photos, because this would prevent this problem and eliminate scrolling. ) Also, the last photo still didn't load properly, so I give up. In the last photo, the grey wall is where the kitchen cabinets will be. The stud wall is where the large cut-out will go.

Good for you for designing the cut out so that you can see and communicate into the next room. I personally hate to be cut off from the rest of the house, although I know some folks feel differently. My sewing space is in our family room, so my hubby and I can watch sports together, even if I'm sewing. It works for us!

Good luck on seeing lots of progress soon.

A year ago my husband and I decided to take the family room which was in the lower part of our raised ranch and split the room in half. In order to separate the space a friend gave up 4 book shelves which we put two of them side to side and the other two back to back creating a half of a wall so to speak. It has worked out lovely for both of us and we each have our own space. But in a years time I have managed to buy lots of stuff and find I am running out of room. I am very organized so I know it is just a matter of refolding and reorganizing fabric and things of that sort. But here is a picture of my room. I have no closets so I had to make wise decisions for storage. All in all I think I did pretty good and love love love my sewing room. I call it "My piece of heaven" :)

My sewing room is in the basement. Which is okay with me mostly ....... but I do feel cut off from my hubby who is up stairs. I always sew in marathons (I sew all day, I haven't figured out the 15 minute sew time some of you do) so I don't see him all day. It works for us as he likes sports and reading and I like home improvements shows, etc. But it is lonely down there.

Bring a tv down to your sewing room for him, and get him a set of headphones.
My husband and I use headphones in the study. We play two different video games sometimes. This way the other isn't disturbed by the sounds of the video games. Even now, we are both playing Skyrim, we wear headphones.
