Craigslist find and new room configuration.

So this weekend I scored 3 tall and 1 short Ikea Billy shelves in white for $90 on craigslist. So this is my spare room/sewing room. I store the bed under my long arm. I have a white board behind my longarm for practicing and a shelf at the 6 foot level (I am only 5 foot 4 inches) to put storage and pretty stuff on. Come around the corner and I have a sewing desk that I got on craigslist for $50 and painted white. I had to change the top so that it flipped up in the back instead of covering the hole where the machine goes so I wouldn't have to move it all the time to close the top. The short shelves hold my laptop, patterns, cricut and bobbin winder. The others hold my fabric and scrapbooking stuff. The shelves beside the closet door hold my FQs and less than a yardages. I made that (yea me!) I still need to repaint it because I don't like the color but it is pretty fresh paint so I will live with it for now. I also have a makeshift design wall of flannel tablecloth to stretch accross the bookshelves if needed.

Very nice room. I would never have thought about putting the bed under the longarm but it seems to work well. I like the wall color!

Very nice room.

I'm thinking about the Billy shelves from IKEA for my sewing room. How do you like them? Kudos for scoring them on Craigs list. We will have to drive several hours to get to the nearest store to purchase them in our pickup. My Dh thinks that cube storage would be better- what do you think?
I like your sewing space very much

michelleoc 02-11-2014 07:48 AM

First, let me say I LOVE how you said you store the bed under the long arm! The bed doesn't matter, the quilting does. Your room looks great. That shelf on the wall with the fat quarters, you made that?! I need one!

Great room and smart shopping. My whole sewing room is also a Craigslist sewing room!!! 1 Ikea table, 2 kitchen cabinets with formica top, 1 tall 5 shelf bookcase, and 2 white children's tall cabinets. All for $250. Done and I'm set.

What great scores on craigslist. Fabulous room to be creative. You are blessed to have such a wonderful space.

Sewmom,
I was considering the cubes but most of my stuff is not 16 inches deep. Folding fabric around comic boards is only 8-9 inches deep and if you want to store fabric on a bolt, you couldn't store it in the cubes. My shelves are only 10 inches deep so I put my scrapbooking stuff (mostly 12 inches deep) on the bottom shelves. The white boxes on my shelves are also Ikea and they are 11 inches wide, 14 inches deep and 7 inches tall so two would fit per cube but mine are turned sideways and work fine. The 10 inch deep billy shelves are $79 and the 16in deep shelves are $99. you can also buy doors for the shelves if you want to hide some mess.

Nice CL score! Your space looks great.

I love organized rooms, I just can't keep one organized. Once I start even thinking about a project, I toss several fabrics around trying to "audition" them and hence my organized area is a disaster area. When it gets so overwhelming that I can't find anything that I know must be around, I start organizing again. Some times the organizing or clean happens because we are having visitors that will be staying several days and I can't just close the door to my sewing room!

GOOD SCORE, ACES!! I always talk here about the joys of Billy Bookcases and my many Ikea finds. Your room looks terrific and I'm wishing you many happy quilting hours!!

joyce888 02-12-2014 05:37 PM

Fantastic room and I like your whiteboard. I may have to steal that idea.

acesgame 02-13-2014 05:31 PM

Joyce,
The white board was originally bought as my design board. It is magnetic too so I would just put them on the board with magnets. I have dogs so the flannel catches all their hair but I like them better.

LynnVT 02-13-2014 05:52 PM

Great setup! I love Billies.

Cheryl7758 02-14-2014 05:42 AM
