Do you separate fabric/scraps by color?
 

Mine are all happily breeding like rabbits in a large scrap kennel.:D

I try to seperate them by size and color but so hard to keep up.

I separate scraps by color, have a row of baskets on the shelf above my cutting area, they are labeled by color, as I cut I just throw into correct basket.

I keep my fat quarters in drawers like those. By color and theme.

My fabric is separated into colors in large bins. If I have scraps, they happily breed together in one bin.

I have mine separated by size right now. I don't have enough drawers to separate by color, but I do have several sets of these drawers. That would work great. Now just to figure out what to do with the stuff in them. I do not have room for anything else in my sewing room.

I do and I store them just like the crayons are stored but under my long arm table. I did not put labels on them as my boxes are see through so I can see the color any ways. also some colors do not neatly stay in one bin, they need two bins.

My scrap organization is limited to 1) ugly, ugly but too good to get rid of 2)Christmas 3) skinny strips 4) selvedge edges 5) inherited from mama.
Probably not the best system.

I'm with you. I even have the color problem with my larger pieces :).

I do separate them by color in bins but they later end up in different color bin. I think they mingle while I am asleep. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I just sort mine by color into plastic stacking bins, but this looks like a much better idea. Thanks for posting.

I just recently organized my fabric. ALL of it. Took about two weeks. Now, the scraps are in separate bins, sorted by color, theme, and size. Some of them (such as patriotic and halloween) take up several bins. I am now trying to work through all of the kits and BOM's I have purchased...

I don't know what organization is although my sister keeps telling me I need to get some.

Okay Betty, that made me spit on my computer screen -- please come over and help me clean it up. LOL!!!!

I looked on the site that prints the labels and have found several other interesting labels to print as well. I like that idea. organize??? I keep trying but it is something that does not come naturally to me. So I NEED labels.

That tells me it's time to sew

Mine are in two bins, one for colors and one for whites/neutrals. The bins fit right under my quilting frame.

I separate them by size and within the sizes they are subdivided into prints and solids(or prints that read as solid). The prints and solids are further subdivided by value-- darks, mediums and lights. I don't separate by hue (color) because that would take more time and space than I've got available.

I don't have too many scraps (yet) so I only organize by size... strips for string quilt, larger cuts and crumbs

I am trying to organize my smaller scraps by size in a bin and group colors/prints together. I had dumped all my scraps in 2 bins and although I have spent several days ironing and cutting the scraps into usable pieces the bins are just as full. I think they are multiplying every time I give them space.

Not only by color, but I put all the same fabric pieces in Ziploc sandwich bags! Back in early quilting days, I just kept the scraps with the same stash fabric, and still do if the scrap is large enough to get something out of, but now I find this works better. OCD I realize, but it works for me.

When I said I separated my scraps by size and value I should have added that that is only for pieces that I have turned into "pre cuts". My "pre cuts" are in two drawers one for solids or prints that read as solids and one for prints. Each drawer is large enough that I can store stacks of 5", 3.5" and 2" squares separated into light medium and dark values. I also keep leftover commercial precuts and strips in these two drawers mixed in with my homemade precuts.

anything too small to get at least a 2" square goes into my shoebox for string quilts or making crumb fabric-- that's just a jumble. When the box gets too full to close I spend some time making string blocks or crumb fabric to put into a scrappy quilt.

If a scrap is fat quarter sized and intact (no holes) it gets folded around a template and put into my fat quarter drawer on end with the fold up so I can see what I've got as soon as the drawer is opened. Any intact pieces that are larger than a fat quarter but less than one yard get wrapped around cardboard and placed in another drawer fold side up.

Since my my sewing space is so small (8.5' x 8.5') I have to keep the scraps organized or they'd take over my work space.

I bet if I kept track I'd find that I spend way more time sewing with scraps than with my other fabrics-- it takes a lot of time to keep on top of them.
