fat quarter storage ideas
Hi folks, I just started collecting fat quarters. I would like ideas about storage. I find stacking fabric is messy when pulling pieces for use. I don't want to take time to reorganize every time I pull a piece out. Thanks:D

I use totes - short in height (about the size of folded fq), wide and deep. I have a couple of these and they hold plenty of FQs.
Similar to this type: http://alturl.com/v9max These are 6" in height, 18" wide and 29" deep. Nan |
I use those plastic containers on wheels, with lids, from bargain stores. Some are just high enough to sit the fat quarters up on end - that is when one collects enough, and you can easily get at each piece. When one container is full the next one sits on top. Easily stored on shelves and you can see what fabrics you have.

I have a little drawer CD rack and I put then on end in the drawers.

This is how mine are stored....much fuller now. This is picture of them when I first got them.

I purchased of few of these units from either Target or Lowe's and keep fat quarters in the cubbies!

I have a couple of plastic drawer sets I keep mine in. I dived them by color and type. Each drawer holds one. Although some of my favorite colors or types are ready to burst. Think I ought to find some patterns to use some up?

These are all really great suggestions. You guys are full of great ideas on this board. :)

I stand mine on end in a dresser drawer. My stash is (theoretically) contained to one tall 4 drawer dresser. As I continue to purchase past its capacity, I just re-categorize what is stash. So far, kits have had to live elsewhere, all minky and ultra cuddle has been moved out, and anything not strictly for quilting (dec weight for bags) has also been relocated.

What wonderful ideas, i have alot of fat quarters now, and i have been thinking how can i store them so i can see what I have, thanks so much for all these ideas

I purchase several CD wall units, they are just the right size for fat qrts or small pieces of yardage..Hung them on wall in front of my machine, it is handy and the colors of the qrts are very pretty.

I have fun opening every FQ and pressing flat! (also inspecting for true cut, real size and booboos) Got a much better impression of what I had. Sorting by color also helps me plan how to use each one. I gently fold over the color batch and alternate in the stack - put into a bin with a lid. Have had to reroute several to smaller pieces bin due to the fading on the exposed fold. :( I also refold large pieces frequently - I hate having to wash or steam to remove hard folds. :) Obviously, I like using FQ's!

I just finished my organization yesterday for anything I have less than a yard! I found great bins at Target and organized mostly by color and a few speciality bins (i.e. kids, food, Americana, Batik, etc). My mom and I make many charity quilts and people from our guild give us leftovers so we can use them up! This leads to needing a great organization system for small yardage so we don't lose our sanity! lol

Cubes from Walmart have worked for me. Husband bought them for something else and then didn't need them so they are mine now.

i haven't done it but seen where they cut down comic cards and fold the fat quarter on it and the person used the old cd holders she had slipped them into those.. seen an other put them in small crate type boxes fold where the fold is up so they could easily see the fabric and pull it out like a filing system in the old days. also seen them folded that way put in plastic bins that roll under the bed for those that have a lot of them. I have a few since I just started collecting them too so I have been looking for ideas too. those are the ideas i've liked best so far. I like the roll under the bed idea so far the best and will probally grow more so I won't out grow it so soon. also i am limited with space here

I use the totes for DVD's. They have a handle, are flexible, hold a lot of fat quarters and have a handle for carrying. They are also pretty cheap and can be stored easily and keep your fat quarters clean. They are visible, clean, easy to handle and you can see what's available without even opening the case. Check out all those "unwanted" catalogs because they almost always have them. Just make sure the square size is large enough - usually 5 1/2" to 6".

I buy plastic shoe boxes at Dollar Store and put one color in each box. I leave the lids off. I use the lids to hold pieces of blocks I'm working on. They stack nicely and keep me organized.
|
I use the clear plastic sweater boxes bought at Family Dollar. I can get 2 rows in the box

I buy clear shoeboxes and store on top of my white cabinets of fabrics.

ps at the moment I only have 4 of fatquarters.one row in from the right. The rest are scraps by color, strips, blocks, bindings, circles, half squares,
etc. |
Right now mine are all over the place. Once i get my new room my ironing table will be on an old kitchen cabinet that will have 6 drawers in it. So my plan is to store them in those drawers, file folder style.

I keep most of mine in a cabinet in totes, sorted by color. I also put my favorites out in a card holder that my sister was getting rid of at her card shop. It holds charm square packs and folded FQ's perfectly. Love the way it adds color to my room!
