foam boards for storing fabric

I've searched some on here, but now need to ask. Who is it on this forum that makes the foam core boards? I've been using Polar Notions (200 of them), and they're expensive -- but excellent. For my remaining stash -- those pieces that are 1/4 - 1/2 yard I'd like something more reasonable. I have a lot of them.

I use the foam boards sold at Dollar Store for $1 and cut them to size. Works the same as the expensive ones I bought before finding these.

Me too! And you can order a case of 50 at a time from Dollar Tree. Have to love it coming right to my door :-)

squirtygirl 02-08-2012 11:35 AM

Have you thought about using comic book boards? You can buy 100 at the local comic book store, if a store is not availiable you can get a hundred of them on amazon for around ten dollars plus shipping. I got 100 at a comic book store for $7.00. Hope this helps

ecHi, I dont make foam boards but i do go to the dollar store and buy craft board that is paper on both sides with foam in the middle. It comes in s sheet the size of large poster. i just cut it down to the sizes i want to use. i get 6 to 7 81/2 by 11 inches pieces out of one sheet. So at $1.00 a piece for the large board makes my 6 larger boards that i cut out of it cost me 16 cents apiece. its very cheap. hope this helped you out

Is the form boards acid free?

connie_1936 02-08-2012 10:08 PM

don't know if its acid free but who among us will live long enough for that to effect our fabric. a finished quilt saved for someone should probably be stored in acid free material.

ok call me stupid...lol.. i dont know what any of you are talking about foam boards how do they work? thanks paula

I just purchased comic book boards from Amazon. They were about $13 for 100. I do believe you can probably find them cheaper if you have a comic book store in your area (I do, but forgot). They are acid free. What they basically are is posterboard cut to size. They in the long run would take up less room than the foam core boards. You can fold fabric that is about 1/2 yard and up on these. I do think I like the way these can stand up vs. the method of folding the fabric with a 6x24 ruler. You can really see what you have when you use these and they just seem to take up less space.

I was so excited to get these that I immediately started putting my fabric on the boards. I am already down to about six boards left and still have more fabric to do! I would have never thought I would need that many and now I need more. At least I realize that I do have a lcbs (local comic book shop - haha) in my area.

Now I need to decide how I am going to sort my little bolts. Should I sort them similar to what the stores do??? Ideas?

Meg

I wish someone would explain this to those of us who have no clue. It sounds like you are using these foam boards to wrap your stash fabric around. I have never heard of anyone doing this. Would someone consider positing a picture and give us the details of what you are doing. I am getting ready to organize my fabric and this sounds very intersting.

The details would be very much appreciated.

I worry about the acid turning my fabric off colors. HAs that happened to anyone?

johans 02-10-2012 09:25 AM

Google PolarNotions.com They have videos showing how to use their product. It's a book-sized thin acid-free rigid plastic mini bolt piece that you wrap fabric around.. Have you seen pictures of quilt stashes that have fabric on little bolts lined up on book shelves? That's using this kind of product. Great way to be able to see ALL your fabric at a glance.

Went to Polar Notions I can see they are sort of expensive. Out of my price range anyway. I did look at their bolt buddy clips. Do they look like money clips to anyone else?

I googled and found these

Hi sweetie,
I know this sounds bad mentioning ACID but they don't have any ACID in them. This is the type you look for to keep your fabrics like new.
Acid free means it won't harm your fabrics because the boards won't yellow with age. That also means they are PH neutral free of Acid.
They won't get moldy. I have my fabrics in our basement and wrapped on these boards and they are great.
We pay so much for our fabrics that you want them to last and be organized too and the boards are great.
PM for more information if you like to know more. I love theses boards. if you want me to send you a pic. of my fabrics on the boards I very willing to do that.

sweetana3 02-11-2012 02:47 PM

I recently bought 400 comic book boards and love my fabric storage now. I can move the stacks around without the stack getting messy. I can stack vertically in a bookcase and they stay up like books. The fabric now is neat in the totes and easily seen and organized. The boards are reusable since nothing is done to them. If i wanted to have a note of the yardage, I would stick a sticky note in one of the folds or use a 3x5 card with the informtion tucked into a fold.

I even made a presentation at our local guild and got a lot of excitement built around organizing fabric.

I'm with you. I don't know what they are talking about either. Maybe they are pinning fabric to the boards and then using that for storage like books on a shelf. That's all I can picture.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe they use them to wrap their fabric around to resemble a "bolt" of fabric and they can store them upright like books on a shelf.

You take your fabric, fold it in half lengthwise (so the selvages meet) then fold it in half again. So your fabric is approximately 11-1/4inches wide. (11-1/4 times 4 equals 45") by however many yards you purchased. Then you lay your fabric on a flat surface, place the board on top of the fabric (so the longest side of the board is the part is perpendicular to the fabric & there is just a smidgen of the top & bottom of the board showing once it is covered with fabric) and start rolling the fabric around the board until the fabric is all rolled onto the board. Take the last inch, fold it under so the edge that is cut is folded under, & secure it with a plastic coated paper clip. Hope this helps explain it.

Foam board is a poster board size sheet of dense foam that is about 1/4 inch thick and can readily be cut to any size you want.

I use the comic book board, work great!

Thank you for this wonderful info. I did not like the idea of cutting a bunch of foam board. I will give your advice a try, using the comic boards.

Use your rotary cutter, mat and straight edge ruler.

jigs1354 06-25-2012 03:55 PM

Hi Johans, I know this was a question last March so don't know if you found what you needed or not.
My husband makes & sells the foam core boards, acid free, you can order any size you want from him just send me PM with questions. 50 to a set and very very inexpensive beside. He gives pricing on the sizes you need.
what sizes were you looking for? I use the (4X6) for fat quarters and 2 1/2" strips the (6X9) are great for 1/2 yards. The next size is (10X6 1/2.) The next one is (10X15)

I worked at Michaels for many years, we always called the foam boards, "Foam Core", now I don't know if that is trade name or just what the frame shop called it. I know it they used the 1/8 inch sheets to mount counted cross stitch. I don't think they would use it on cross stitch if it wasn't acid free.
