Great project storage discovery!

Warning: lots of brand name dropping but I'm not affiliated with any of them, I just shop there… My fabric intake has exceeded my project output lately (I'm sure NOBODY has that problem but me) so I've been searching for additional storage in my already full sewing space. I've considered many options; shelves, cabinets, carts, bags, etc. and decided that I'd wait and when the right thing came along I'd just know it. That happened yesterday when I visited Ikea.

I'd seen other steel shelving and thought an 18" square shelf might fit the bill, but when I saw this Ikea OMAR shelf at 18 1/8"w x 14 1/8"d x 72"h (outside dimensions, not in between the posts), I was ready to buy--and it was only ~$40!! I have SO MANY of those Art Bin project boxes that are 14"w, & some are double height (I get them at Jo-Ann). What I discovered, is that this shelf holds 19 (!) of the single (3 1/2"h) boxes and as you can see in the picture, I have some of the 6"h as well. MORE can be stored on top and the whole shelf has a much smaller footprint than the 18" square shelf I'd originally considered, always a good thing in tight spaces.

I'm SO happy with this new addition to my sewing area that I had to share it with all of you. Maybe it will be the perfect solution to your storage needs too. Here's a link to the shelf: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S19829090/ (it says they deliver too!)

You did an excellent job on your organization.

I bought shelving like that at Bed Bath & Beyond. Don't remember the cost.

suern3 08-09-2015 01:36 PM

Thanks for sharing! Looks like a great idea.

QuiltnLady1 08-09-2015 02:28 PM

Great idea - wonder if I could squeeze one in my sewing room.

tessagin 08-09-2015 03:08 PM

ANd it has wheels!!! I get project boxes (14 3/4x14 3/4x3") from Michaels. Love them because I can see. I also label the project, like name that it's for. I usually wait til I can get the 3 for $10.00.

tessagin 08-09-2015 03:10 PM

BB&Y is right down the road from me. 3 doors from Michael's. Hmm. Thanks.

Love your idea.

cannyquilter 08-10-2015 12:09 AM

Notmorecraft. Everything is double the price in UK lol

mary705 08-10-2015 04:19 AM

This is what they have at BB&B, size is a little different.

In my sewing room closet, I have five 74" x 48" x18" shelving units and two 72" x 36" x 14" shelving units. When I painted and re-arranged my closet, I placed all of the units "grocery store style" (in rows) rather than against the back wall of the closet. I purchased one extra of the 74" x 48" x 18" shelving units to harvest the shelves so that I could store fabrics that I folded onto comic boards. Instead of folding fabric on the long side of the comic boards, I folded it on the short side. That way, with the additional shelves, I can utilize both sides of the shelves. I used almost all of the 500 of the comic boards that I purchased. I like to see what I have rather than dig in bins. Luckily, I have the room to do it this way. I was always buying more fabric because I could not remember what I had stored in bins.

I also installed casters on all of the shelving units so they are easier to move. I got the larger shelving units from Home Depot and the smaller units online. Each shelf can hold 300 pounds so I don't have to worry about them breaking or bending.

I buy the plastic project boxes at Costco. 5 for 20 dollars. I love them. Your shelf looks like mine. I bought it a while ago. Enjoy the neatness. Luann

Looks great! I am patiently waiting for our Ikea to open next summer, so I can get my storage problems resolved.

sassysews2 08-10-2015 02:18 PM

check your magazines, BB&Y has a 20% off coupon in a lot of magazines.

RuthiesRetreat3 08-10-2015 04:09 PM

That's not fair. You're 10 times closer to Scandanavia than California is. Shipping alone should save you money on that.

nwm50 08-11-2015 03:34 AM

Great!! Thanks for that info...it may be just what I needed for this one small space I have! Gotta shop now....

mjhaess 08-13-2015 08:27 AM

Great organization..

lots2do 08-13-2015 04:15 PM

That is a great idea. We have a funny space in one of our closets where one of those might be just the ticket. I'll have to go measure the space! Thanks!

Mariposa 08-14-2015 04:16 PM

Great find! Looks like a great unit. Thanks for the info!

stitch678 08-14-2015 04:26 PM

Wonder why they cost more in UK? lsn't that a lot closer to Sweden, where lkea stuff originates?

quiltjoey 08-14-2015 05:08 PM

I have my storage bins stacked on top of each other for fat quarters and am constantly picking up them up and having to move them to get what I need on the bottom of the stack! So I just ordered 3 from BB&Y for 29.99 each and will pick them up in the morning! Thanks for sharing this info!!

I know why......shipping. I sent a 1# 11oz pkg to England full of fabric and the shipping was almost $24 US.

BerninaGirl 08-20-2015 07:31 AM

Thanks for the tip and the photo

Painiacs 08-20-2015 09:24 AM

Great idea!!!

Great organization...

Leann 08-31-2015 04:34 PM

Thank you for sharing this. I can see this solving SO many organizing challenges for me!

JudyG 10-14-2015 07:58 AM

Thank you so much for posting this thread. We have just moved and I have been trying to combine two sewing rooms into one. I have waaaaaaaaaay too much stuff. Anyway, I am trying to be more organized with storing my stuff. I confiscated two racks that my husband had and put them in the closet in my sewing room to hold the large plastic containers of fabric and needed something to hold my project bins. I ordered this rack that you mentioned and it is absolutely perfect! So thanks again. It was just what I needed.

RonieM 10-21-2015 06:50 AM

I bought one of the Omar shelves a couple of weeks ago and let'st just say it is AWESOME! Thank you for the tip.

Altairss 11-02-2015 07:40 AM

These are great I have one small nitch that this should work in and keep my projects that I am currently working on store along with fat quarters. All the rest of my fabric are on comic boards in cupboards so I can shop my stash!

annieshane 11-02-2015 08:33 AM

Love this, and it has wheels - awesome storage for narrow space.

quiltingcandy 11-02-2015 02:25 PM

I don't see any wheels, but with what I would want to use it for I don't think I would want wheels.

soniboo 11-02-2015 05:05 PM

Great storage!

Prissnboot 11-10-2015 10:15 AM

I say this tongue in cheek because I have the same problem on a much smaller scale, but perhaps the best way to organize all of our little fabrics - fat quarters, strips and the like - is to display them in quilts....aka USE THEM UP!!!!! LOL!

And if Mrs. Santa were a quilter, her directions to us would be "now Stash Away, Stash Away, STASH AWAY ALL!!!"

mrodarme 11-11-2015 02:43 PM

i bought the same at lowes & home depot..i love it, fits great in a closet & luv the wheels...

clevermom3kids 11-11-2015 05:15 PM

I'm so glad everyone has been helped by my post. I don't post often, so it's good to know it's worthwhile! :)

I just made another trip to Ikea today and discovered some nice cabinets in their bathroom fixture section: The Silveran, The Lillangen, and the Tyngen series. The cabinets are not too deep, not too wide, and look like they'd be great for fat quarters or similar. Now I just need a place they would fit! Perhaps I could start hanging my fabric storage containers from the ceiling, LOL!
