One tip to help keep folded fabric neat when you want the fabric from the stack. Use a ruler to slip under the fabric to pull it out,, the stack stays in place and no more wonky stacks.

Kiri, I love the boxes. My fabric on comic boards tend to lean, so I would like to use both!

I store my fabric stash in a a lateral cherry file cabinet, folded over hanging file folders. I can see what fabrics I have at a glance, the fabric stays clean and dust free and isn't exposed to sunlight that can fade it. I store small precut pieces like leftover binding and a note about the fabric name and store where I purchased it in the file folder. The cabinet looks nice in our home office too. It works for me.

I 've been quilting for over 35 years and I bought fabric faster then I could sew . Storing it has become a struggle. I have begun to give most of it away on the guild free table. Donation fabric for our community service will take it but then no one chooses the older darker prints to use for quilts, especially for the kid quilts.

Our guild donates quilts to a couple of hospitals. They get a lot of quilts for smaller kids, but the hospitals lack quilts for the older (teenage) boys. The dark fabrics work great for the older boys.

Some of it is used but it's always the last to be chosen so it ends up having to be stored and kept around for a long time especially when so much of the donated fabric is the darker floral prints. When we take lap quilts for assisted living groups and they choose a quilt they want the dark ones are always the ones left if more then enough to give out.

I have found that it is easier to pull fabric choices, and more importantly, to put them back!

I don't use comic boards. I can fit more fabric in the space available if I don't use them. I fold my fabric to fit whatever space I have. If you have enough fabric, they'll stand up like books. I don't prewash.

Does anyone know if storing fabric on comic boards or card stock takes up less room than if it is folded and stacked on top of each other? I have thought about the comic boards but I don't want to do that if it takes up more room than just folding and stacking the fabric.
