Idea for Fabric Storage - and It's Free!
 

I got some sheets I had ordered today they reminded me of a storage idea I've used but tend forget about. For small cuts of fabric, pre cuts, jelly rolls, I use the zippered soft plastic container that the sheets come in. The small size makes them perfect for fabric collections, small cuts, pre cuts, etc. They usually have a pocked inside with a cardboard in it telling what it was that came in it. I just take that cardboard and turn it over to the blank side and write what I'm storing in it. It's quick, easy and best of all free!

I also save those bags, but never have enough. I do like the Free price, also.

Haha! I thought I was the only one that liked to save those to put fabric, projects etc. in. I like they are clear and with a zipper.

I also save my bags like this...but have them stored away in a drawer in an unused bedroom. Think maybe it's time that I bring them down into the sewing room!

The small bags that pillowcases come in are really sturdy and have a zipper. I use them for many things, but they are especially fine for knitting needles. I like to knit in the round, and I frequently lose one needle for a set of four. Alternatively, sometimes I need a 9 inch double pointed needle for a sleeve or baby cap, but a 16 inch one for sleeves, or a 24 inch one for a whole sweater. Thus, I have many needles in any given size and I find these sturdy bags perfect for keeping them together.

Just be careful to keep the zipper open a bit. Fabric need a little air. The bag will still keep the fabric piles separated.

I sew mostly away from home. I use those small zipper plastic bags to hold my small, seldom-used tools. That way they are all together and don't get lost or misplaced, as well as being easily transported. I also have one for my yo-yo makers, so if I am working on yo-yos, I just grab the plastic pouch and I have the yo-yo maker and the instructions. They never get lost or misplaced.

Yes, I use those all the time, too. I use them for "kits" -- to hold coordinating fabrics and a pattern or idea that I intend to make "someday". I also use them to hold collections of scraps. I love that they are soft, see through, tough, and have a zipper. And, as you say -- free! In a manner of speaking, anyway........lol.

I agree with Friday 1961......Since I sent twins to college several years ago...I have several (lots) of these bags. I store a specific pattern and all of the fabric for that pattern in each bag. That way I am not tempted to "just cut a bit from this piece of fabric" when the need arrives. Hate to admit how many projects that I have stashed away like this. I do try to get to making them...I need to live to be 104 years old to use up what in these bags.

I store my fabric in empty clear plastic rectangular containers that I get at the grocery store when I'm purchasing loose leaf lettuce. We eat the lettuce, I wash the container (with lid), dry them and put my fabric in. I like these containers because I can stack them and see through them. It works for me. I hope it's OK to keep my fabric in these plastic containers... and they are Free after we eat the lettuce!

I have saved those for years and I love them. I have and use all sizes from bedspreads, sheets and pillow cases. I “kit” fabric for quilts I want to make and don’t want to forget. Those senior moments seem to come pretty often and while I remember I want to make the quilt, I forgot where the pattern was.(in a book or a magazine? Yikes!). No I have my kits and pattern all st and ready. I do love those Zipper bags.

Oh, I save those, too! I use them for cut pieces and some for thread -- one color to a box. I have a thread box that I thought I'd love but don't due to the spool spaces, so I've devised another way to store thread that I have many spools of in the same color.

It's possible that I save too many "free" containers, lol!

I really like using them for UFOs, WIPs or for a "fabic collection" that I have chosen for a specific project - keeps everything together so pieces don't get lost and so I don't forget and use a pre-chosen fabric for another project. Love using these because they are clear so everything inside is visible and stays in one place! They are sturdy and transportable!
LOL!! If you don't use yours, pass them on to another quilter - :D

I saved a couple and used them to store larger batting scraps. I measured the batting pieces first and added a note to my phone with the measurements so I can refer to it to see what size pieces I have on hand.

Yep, I have all my friends save their bags for me. I also use blanket bags for larger projects.

I never thought to save the rectangular plastic containers. OMG, I've thrown so many of them away. Thank you so much for that idea. I'll be sure to save them from now on. Love this board, I've learned so much from all of you quilters who are so willing to share your ideas with the rest of us.

I have part of my yarn stash in a king sized comforter bag, and more of part of it in two king sized pillow bags. I still need more bags for the rest of my yarn and fabric. :eek:

I use them to store and organize my circular knitting needles. I put individual sizes into small zipper type bags, label the bag with the size in marker, and then put those into the larger zipper bags. I finally know where they all are. I put those bags into a tote bag and can find the size needle I want when I begin a new project. I also keep my handwork in them, like hexies, thread and scissors to work on while I am waiting for appointments. And I like the Free aspect of them too.

oh gosh, when i moved i had to clean out all of the saved things like that. I had way too many. but I do hate tossing things out that could be utilized. Know how you feel.

Great Idea! and I suspect there are other products that come in similar pkgs too. I'll not be so quick to toss these out in the future.

I just got sheers for a bazillion windows and each panel came separate in a zippered plastic bag. What a score! They are the perfect size for projects, small amounts of fabric, etc. So many uses.
My only question is- do you think it may help me get organized? :D

Funny I just opened two pillowcases and threw out the zippered pouch...so I just went to the BR garbage and pulled them out...

I did that a couple years ago when I bought new sheers for my bedroom. Great size like bags.

I always have this fantasy that it's going to help me get more organized and it might help and tiny bit, but not all that much. :D

I saved those and cut them up to use as templates. I love the idea of using them for fabric storage - are they too airtight, though?

Yes! I save and use those too! The last ones I received were not zippered, but were all cloth and had a velcro closure on the flap...nice! I also make storage bags out of scraps occasionally. That being said, all those bags and all those projects stored away has not helped me one iota to get anything completed. They look nice and neat though. :)

I enjoy these also as we are full-time in our 36' RV. As I work on a project and am gathering material for another one, I can maximize my space as they are soft and malleable. I would go crazy if I couldn't see what was in each bag and had to open a container to find out what was in it.

Since fabric need to breathe, could you just punch holes in the corners of each side? Same for the plastic lettuce containers...
