Inexpensive Cutting Table

1 Attachment(s)
I was lucky enough a few weeks ago to find a used desk for sale for $10. The approximate size was 24" deep by 36" wide - just the size of the new cutting mat I bought. It is super sturdy with a slide out shelf where a keyboard would go and storage below that (the other slideout shelf was missing). I then purchased 4 locking casters at Home Depot and installed them on the desk legs so I can move it easily plus I like the extra height they provided - the cutting surface is 32" high. While I would love to have a permanent cutting station, this will do for now. I can store my rulers on the slide out shelf and some of my project boxes underneath. I am tickled with my new cutting table / storage unit for under $20.

I think that is a wonderful idea - wish I would have thought of it! the storage looks like the best I have seen.

CindyA 08-22-2012 01:39 PM

Awesome! I don't even think you'll need a "permanent" one, I think this is great. It's a good size and height and with the wheels you can move it when you need to. Terrific!!

Great recycle! I would call that a success story for sure!

Great job reusing the desk.

Perfection!!! If it works for you now and when you can expand I bet this can work with that too!

Neesie 08-22-2012 04:07 PM

Looks perfect!

It looks like a computer desk that has a much happier life now! Great job. Mind if some of us steal the idea?

Please do!

ube quilting gave me an idea on painting it...maybe not flamingo pink but a nice turquoise or other bold color. :)

Great idea! I might have to look for an old desk!

bevster 08-23-2012 05:33 AM

What a wonderful find! I purchased a folding table from JoAnn's and IT STINKS. It is so unsteady, shaking back and forth and the pull out legs keep falling off their hinges.
KEEP THIS TABLE FOR SURE!

Looks like the desk works great as a cutting table . And a great price. :)

Jingle 08-23-2012 06:12 AM

Very nice set up, if it works, use it. Lucky you to find it.

arheath 08-23-2012 06:37 AM

I love recycle. Very nice.

llong0233 08-23-2012 07:35 AM

Great job. It looks like you used all available space wisely and I bet you don't look for something "permanent" for quite a while.

Amythyst02 08-23-2012 07:42 AM

Oh I like it very much. Not sure I would even replace it. Thinking, I am going looking for a computer desk like that.

jamsbuying 08-23-2012 08:05 AM

You scored! Enjoy.

fayeberry 08-23-2012 08:48 AM

that's really nice and how smart you are to have seen how you could use it.

Sew Freak 08-23-2012 09:14 AM

awesome find and nice price too!!!

What a wonderful cutting table. It certainly doesn't look temporary. Thanks for sharing. It's always nice to see repurposed items.

carolynjo 08-23-2012 01:13 PM

Good job repurposing. I'll bet that you'll like your work station so much that it will remain a fixture in your studio.

quiltingcandy 08-23-2012 01:20 PM

I bought an old computer desk to set a TV on in my sewing room and that keyboard shelf holds all my rulers perfectly. There is storage underneath it and I love it. You will too, it is not temporary, it is just too useful. I do keep my rulers covered so they don't get dust all over them though.

Excellent find!

I found an old science table from the local university at goodwill for $6.99. The top is soap stone and weighs a ton. The cabinet has 5 drawers on side and a cabinet door on the other. It was an amazing find!

msstics 08-23-2012 07:51 PM

very clever of you, good deal and idea!

I love the storage too!

I bought an older wooden computer desk second-hand and I'm still using it next to my sewing table. The keyboard pull-out holds a small ironing area and I store some of my projects underneath in Sterilite boxes. It has a drawer and a cabinet on one side. Before I built the Shed, I was sewing in a 5' X 8' walk-in closet. I had my sewing machine and table on one side and that computer desk on the other, and all I had to do was swivel my chair around to cut or iron! Computer desks are very handy! Congratulations on your wonderful find!

carolaug 09-03-2012 07:09 AM

I love it...just needs a good paint job. I have a computer desk in my back room...cannot believe I have not thought of using the keyboard try to hide my rulers...thanks for the idea!
