I use handi-bobs for any spool that will accept them. They are ridiculously expensive if you buy three on a card but if you watch ebay or Amazon you can get them for much less. Check ebay item 380760219140 to see what they look like -- very tidy with a ways to capture the tail of the bobbin thread. I've also used those bright pink plastic pegs for spools with larger holes and pipe cleaners for jumbo spools and cones. Also plastic baggies for cones and matching bobbins.

Count me as one more who hates a thready mess in my drawer.

Unfortunately those handi-bobs don't work with aurifil thread. Or that's what I've read in many places, anyway.
