I've "outgrown" some books, patterns, notes

Back in the dark ages, before internet, I had to gather and file articles to both keep up to date and have resources for teaching. I continued to do that beginning in 1998 when I really took off on my quilting passion.

Now, I am sorting my books and emptying large 3-ring binders. I guess I could look on the bright side and tell myself that I am repurposing the plastic sleeves! :-) The major push is that I feel trapped by things! My shelves were full of books, magazines, and patterns.

This purging won't be accomplished overnight. Someone posted on another thread the thought: WILL I USE IT?
Getting rid the overload should free up time to actually sew. Getting to the sewing part is the carrot before this ole horse...

tucsonquilter 11-07-2016 05:57 AM

Sounds like something I need to do.

laughingquilter 11-07-2016 12:29 PM

I need to do that too but I'm afraid I'll find even more projects that I'll be reminded that I want to work on than ones that I want to get rid of.

quiltsRfun 11-07-2016 12:41 PM

Anyone who's been quilting for a while will likely have the same problem. I've recently started to purge some of my old stuff. Looking forward to the feeling of freedom and relief, not to mention shelf space.

Yup, it could definitely be a rabbit trail... :D

I made myself promise to finish a few things before I bought any more FABRIC or BOOKS. Yesterday at Lolly's.....yes, I live 11 miles from there.... I bought another book that I had heard about on this board. I'm hopeless.

mrodarme 11-08-2016 05:18 AM

i just did this...downsizing my house - going thru so many books, magazines, articles...i figured my tastes have changed...anything i want to make i can find the directions...what was sad, when i took them to the second hand book store, i got a whopping 11.00 for 20+ years of nice books...cant look at that tho...i got to use them & enjoy them...decluttering is great...now i look forward to a new area to set up...& new quilts to conquer

tessagin 11-08-2016 05:22 AM

As I try to arrange my room, I have been going through some of the patterns and have found I have multiples. So the extras are being shredded. We have a cross-cut shredder. Giving it a work-out. Have been recycling the older sleeves. That has freed up more space than I thought would. Yesterday put some of my patterns on flash drive.

coopah 11-08-2016 05:59 AM

I'm purging, too. Luckily, I have friends who are thankful for my unused things...and what they don't want, I take to my guild and put on the free table. So far, most of the things have gone to other homes. It helps. THen I went to find some Christmas fabric among my stash...oh the choices! So why do I think I need to buy more? I'm downsizing on emails from companies that sell quilting things, too, because the temptation will be removed. I need to finish or even start what I have already.

Wanabee Quiltin 11-08-2016 07:47 AM

I have just moved and I have found just tons of things I no longer use. I was looking at a quilt magazine yesterday and wanted to rip out a quilt pattern and picture I really liked. I would feel guilty giving that to a thrift store to sell. I do feel freer now after giving tons of stuff away.

mac 11-08-2016 08:02 AM

I want to down-size, but the minute I get started I get so overwhelmed. I make a mess and then that mess never quite gets finished and I end up with another mess. I am very easily distracted. On the other hand, I tend to keep things longer than I should because I have experienced too many times getting rid of something only to find out I needed it a month or two later. I get very frustrated with myself and then I drag my feet...

Clmay 11-08-2016 10:28 AM

My purging will start with the new year. I travel to see relatives. I live in
Buffalo and travel up to the St. Lawrence Seaway down to the Syracuse area and back to Buffalo. I am settleing in at my Buffalo home for the hard winter. Then I can get rid of things I don't use or want.

tlpa 11-08-2016 02:02 PM

I've been feeling overwhelmed myself lately as well.....maybe because I have the first floor cleared out to re-finish wood floors, and everything is stuffed in the kitchen, basement and 2nd floor! And it's taking longer than I thought because I thought I could just sand the floors, but no, I have to strip them because the shellac will gum up the sandpaper! So, while not feeling 100% on top of it, I'm heading into the 2nd week on my hands and knees stripping floors with a paint brush....
I do take a small stack of my quilting magazines into the bathroom and go through them while there, so it is making feel a little better to separate out those I'm no longer interested in....

The Japanese folks have a saying, "Hold it in your hands for five minutes, if it gives you joy, keep it, if not get rid of it."

cashs_mom 11-08-2016 03:22 PM

I've started scanning a lot of things and keeping them on my computer and passport for easier storage and use. I don't find that having books and stuff around inhibits my sewing time or creativity. But it's a lot easier to find things on the computer than in 10 loose leaf binders! I've also tossed some stuff that's just not relevant anymore.

mac --- I can understand the feeling of being overwhelmed as I inherited a home with basement, large garage, etc. The contents represented decades of saving. Each area was more than Full of Things.....

So --- this is what I do now. I take out only those things I can go through in x amount of time. If my time is almost up I hurry and put items away as best I can and discard the trash bag, donation bag, etc. Over the weekend, I filled up a total of six large brown grocery bags with paper to be recycled. Those bags are in the garage to be recycled with some plastic items. The two large brown grocery bags with donations for St. Vincent de Paul are in my car trunk. Another donation bag is ready for anything at anytime. If I have something in my hand that I want to discard, I can walk to the appropriate area and take care of it right away. That, to me, is freedom.

The other thing I think of is how much I am paying to "house" all these things I've accumulated. Have I gotten the best use of the space? Will I ever use ---- whatever. How big of a financial loss would incur if I gave something away and found out weeks or months later that I could have used --- whatever????

We all try to find a system which will meet our personal needs. I've been using this system for about 2.5 years. It started with a challenge by a friend for us to each discard, pass on, or donate a minimum of one large brown grocery bag weekly. Ann and I found it was really easy to fill a donation bag weekly plus another bag for trash. Little by little, we created a habit which works for us. Good Luck!

mrodarme, I thank you for sharing your attitude about using and enjoying the books you ended up taking to a second hand bookstore. I, too, have come to terms with the investment in the books. I have enjoyed using the books, have learned many new techniques, met people who became friends, etc. So, I can safely say that I have invested in myself for entertainment, knowledge, and socialization. Plus --- some other quilter will have the pleasure of discovering the books for sale at a reasonable price!

Our house is full of things that need to go away...especially things my husband has been saving for 40 or 50 years! We have booklets and maps from everywhere we have ever been. I keep telling him that everything changes and his information is outdated, but he has a sickness that he inherited from his parents. Junk collecting!! Every fall I try to support goodwill with all of the things we never use. It is usually my stuff because he cannot part with anything! I am in the process of fall purging now! Feels good to have less stuff hanging around.

lots2do 11-17-2016 04:35 PM

Rip out what you want to keep and just recycle the old magazine. You're right, no one would want an incomplete magazine but you bought it, you can downsize it.

BerninaGirl 11-26-2016 06:12 AM

Most printers have a scanner feature in them, try scanning what you want and then give the book or magazine away.

mountainwoman 12-20-2016 03:01 PM

Well, if you have a scanner (maybe part of your printer?), you could scan it into a computer file:o

SarahBethie 12-28-2016 12:24 PM

I do periodic purges and only maintain information that I'll have to pay to access online. Namely Wine Spectator magazine! I have a collection of cooking, travel, and decorating magazines that provide ideas and useful resources. Aside from these I've transitioned to Zinio and receive all my magazines free of charge. I don't purchase quilting or sewing books. The local library has more than enough.

QuiltnLady1 12-28-2016 07:52 PM

I too purged when we moved -- got rid of a bunch of books and now can't find the book I bought for a special pattern for DIL -- and I can't remember the name of the book. Sigh.
