My Sewing Area

5 Attachment(s)
I had a sewing room in the basement, but Jim was always complaining he never saw me anymore. So, I moved my sewing machine upstairs to the spare bedroom. I bought some counter top remnants from Menards (like Home Depot) for about $20.00 each and created a 6 foot long cutting table and another 6 foot piece sets on top of an oak trestle dining table we no long use. This gives me a larger sewing table. I also keep a laptop here. I keep my fabric stash downstairs. I still have the old sewing area and a large cutting table with storage downstairs. My son built the cutting table for me out of something he used to have for his large speakers and guitar stuff. I just had him put shelves in it and top it with counter top. I purchased clear small totes at Walmart and keep only one color in each tote. These are stored on a shelf unit Jim built for the kids toys when they were little. This way it is easier to keep it organized. I bought several garden tool bags to store sewing tools in.

Looks like you have a great "upstairs" sewing room! Thanks for sharing.

TinkerQuilts 02-15-2013 11:15 AM

Your new room is very nice, and looks like it's ready for sewing.
I too have a quilting room in the basement (for fabric/ironing/cutting, etc) and on the main floor (for regular sewing/piecing) of our house.

Congratulations on your nifty new sewing room!

It looks like a nice work space!

Looks great. Love all the light shining in. I would get tired of going up and down the stairs though. Of course, I most certainly could use the exercise.

Nice sewing area! My house is one level so I've taken over the larger of the two "extra" bedrooms. I do my cutting on the kitchen island. Even though it isn't in one room it is nice to get up and move around sometimes.

What a wonderful room. I love the availability of natural light from that window. Now you need a nice comfy chair so Jim can keep you company!

Did you design/make the pin cushion on your sewing machine? How is it attached to machine ? Great looking space..

Geri B 02-16-2013 07:54 AM

My daughter in law made that for me. It has a ribbon to tie it around the machine and is backed with that grip shelf liner, which keeps it in place. I am going to make one for all my sewing friends., I found a roll of grip liner at the Dollar General for $2.00. I think she found the idea on Pinterest.

LOL, I do spend my time in here sewing. He watches television, but at least I am closer.

Great light and creative use of furniture and materials.

Having a window makes a lot of difference doesn't it? Great job!

Looks great I too have my sewing area in the basement.

I am admiring the little pin cushion you have wrapped onto your sewing machine. Anything to help with clutter of things around sewing is very good.

Lucky you. It looks so nice & bright.

Wow I really like the holder you store all your notions in, very good idea.

Nice sewing room. I used to have a basement sewing room that was large and nice, but I didn't like being away from the family. So now, I'm in a much smaller bedroom in the main part of the house and I don't feel alone. I guess I spent too many years being able to hear my loved ones.

wraez 02-17-2013 08:19 PM

You've created a wonderful sewing room! I hope that you and hubby have found a solution that works for both of you.

But I know how your hubby feels ... I have a large sewing studio upstairs and I am the one who now hates to be away from dh while he is downstairs watching tv etc. I just don't want to drag my heavy machine downstairs or turn my dining area into the mess it was years ago. Sometimes there is no pleasing me.

Love your extension table for your machine. Just bought a 24 X 24 inch on and love it. Place to put pieces before and after sewing and laying out squares.

Liz22 02-17-2013 11:41 PM

I love it! Thanks for sharing you're story, you inspire me!

Looking good and great storage ideas!

gramquilter2 02-18-2013 07:04 AM

You have a nice space to sew in. Has your husband moved a TV and lounge chair in yet so he has something to do while in your sewing room? That's what my guy has done plus a cribbage board so we can play while watching TV. Yes in the sewing room!

mjhaess 02-19-2013 04:57 PM

Great space....I would love it....LOL....

lizzy 02-20-2013 05:39 AM

Nice nice sewing room. I just took a picture of you ruler holder. Is that something you made or bought. It looks like something I could use to save space on my cutting table.

bunniequilter 02-20-2013 06:28 AM

Counter top scraps are a great idea.

DonnaC 02-20-2013 10:11 AM

I love it! All those Wal-Mart totes remind me of my own space.... I've cleaned two local Wal-Marts out of a certain type of tote...LOL. What can I say, I love totes!!

Rosebird 02-20-2013 11:12 AM

Enjoy both of your sewing studio and keep your husband happy while creating a Timeless Treasured!

karen526 02-21-2013 05:06 PM

The tote that I have the rulers in is something that I purchased which was meant to hold garden tools. I threw the garden tools out LOL. I have sound some useful things at Hobby Lobby. They also have an online store so you can order from there.l
