My teensy-tiny sewing room

My sewing room is the dining room of my 1939 bungalow. It measures 8 ft x 9 ft. My son and I never used it as the dining room so I took it over. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png You walk from the kitchen, through the sewing room and into the living room with a side exit to the bedroom hallway.

2 metal shelving units on wheels so I can hang things on the backs and sides. Made matching fabric bins to hold all my fabric - they have different colored drawstring 'lids' so I know what type of fabric is inside each one.

Took my old ironing board, removed the broken legs and recovered it in a fun fabric. I have hooks sticking out of it so things are hung there as well - it's on the side of the same shelving unit as my matching fabric bins.

I have stuff hanging from all sides of those shelving units. On the backs are extra cutting mats and some wide fabric. My rulers hang off of hooks on the side. Every inch has to be used.

My late grandfather's sofa table is my sewing table and it barely fits on the wall under the built in cabinet. The room has a bay window so that's where my plants live.

I have RA and the coinciding brain fog. There's a power strip attached to the ironing board with a light plugged into it. If the light is on so is my iron. It's a good way to remember to turn it off. And a good way to see whilst ironing.

My great grandmother's rocker chair is in there as well. It really needs to be reupholstered because the fabric is from the 1940's and not the best of shape.

The cutting table (my old dining table) is actually in the living room cuz I had no room for it in the sewing room. My son had a humongous piece of plexiglass and put it on the table so I have a large one. Yay! Had an old wooden partitioned kitchen drawer, painted it and modge-podged fabric pieces inside, and hung it on the wall to hold my cutting table stuff.

The (dusty) peacock is Cesario - he's a pincushion. The tail feathers come off and are my pattern weights. His chest is quilted (my first attempt at FMQ https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/eek.png) and everything is held together with strong magnets.

It is nice you have so many of your family heirlooms. Your sewing room looks like a hug!

I never thought of it that way. I like it. It's a hug.

And it's my favorite room in the house.

Your pincushion peacock with the pattern weight tail is wonderful. would never have thought of that.

Seems like you have maximized the space you have!

mcadwell 12-09-2020 06:22 PM

Yeah, the only space left is the ceiling! lol

That would be my favorite room, too! Looks like it’s a functional space. I like the hooks on the ironing board you repurposed, too. Not to be a Nosy Parker but, I love the white pitcher and bowls inside your China cabinet. I collect white dish ware so that drew my eye. Thanks for sharing!

The white dishes are close to 20 years old. They're part of a dish set I got from Walmart and are called "Fruit by Gibson Designs" https://www.replacements.com/china-g...-fruit/c/28338

Everyone has to use what they can, LOL, we would all love bigger rooms cause we could fill them up! Great space to have for you!

Looks like a great, cozy spot to do your sewing! Love Cesario! Great idea to have detachable weights.

The room is getting better use now.

Your sewing space looks great. We use what we can.

As others have said, Cesario is so cute! What a great idea for detachable pattern weights. My patterns weights are glass tea light candle holders. They aren't too wide but are thick and and the perfect weight so work very well. They are heart shaped and a pleasant surprise is that the point end works very well in narrow areas on patterns. I keep them in a basket with a handle so are easy to grab and move around.

Congrats on making your tiny space work so well! You are a master organizer!

Oh what a sweet place to create! Instead of wishing for something bigger you have created a cozy refuge.

Thank you. I think your using candle holders and a great idea. They're inexpensive, come in different colors, when empty can hold smaller things like pins, and are probably available in a lot of stores.

Cesario was fun to make. Technically, he was a prototype but I liked the way his body isn't perfectly straight (matched my scoliosis - purely by accident!) and how his tail feathers don't exactly match, so I kept him as-is.

Here's a picture of him going tailless. You can see how I had to reinforce the stitches around the magnets to keep them in place. I made pockets for the magnets inside the 'feathers' but found they liked to move too much and was afraid they'd eventually break through the stitching.

I like your fabric baskets. Maybe I should make some Add to my to do list...lol

I just realized I forgot a picture of my covered ironing board. Whoopsie. Broken legs removed, covered in batting then with a fabric cover I made. Poked holes through the fabric and applied a permanent glue to prevent fraying. Inserted hooks and other things for additional storage and as a way to reuse the ironing board.

When we lived in a townhouse, I used the 6 x 8 breakfast nook as my sewing room. It was tiny. I didn't even have room for an ironing board so I found one that folded down from the wall. I have lots of shelves on the wall so they didn't take up floor space and cut out garments on the floor or used the little round table in the dining area. It was small and cramped but it worked for me for many years.

Wow! That was small. It's amazing what we'll do to be able to sew. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png

It may be tiny but you are making the most of the space and I think your room is cozy and cute.
