Not Very Deep Wall Storage Ideas..please?
 

My sewing room is pretty large, around 13 x 14. With a Longarmer taking up half and a sewing table and a cutting table and one book case, that is all the floor space I can take up. The walls are broken up by windows, closet, double doors and the ends of the longarmer so most of the rooms wall space is non-useable. But I'm thinking about vertical wall storage on the useable spaces I have..I'm tall so I can go pretty high up.....it has to be storage that doesnt stick out too far from the wall for sure no more than 12 inches.. for rulers, fabrics etc. I have a lot of larger pieces of fabric and I've considered hanging curtain rods along the wall and hanging the fabrics folded on them so as to clear off my bookcase..I'd be able to see what I have as well as hang pieced tops and backings etc. That would only stick out a few inches from the wall..any ideas and photos on ways to use wall space that doesnt stick out too far into the room would be appreciated. The bookcase is holding everything in a big pile. :)

In the organization part of this forum there are many ideas from different posts. Men's pant hangers where you can put a lot of fabric on the racks and fold them up. You Tube has a lot of different ideas, just type in storage/organization. I usually have to see a photo of the room to get ideas. But one thing I would start doing is take that bookcase and straighten it up one shelf at a time. You could start with pieces you would use the most in eye level reach and bottom shelf for those not so much used. Also can you store anything under your cutting table. Like storage drawers on casters. Attach small curtain rod or pegboard to side of your cutting table to hang rulers on.

You can hang stuff over the double doors. Some people use the shoe over the door hangers.

My room is 11 x12 and I have a midarm (18in) Consider putting a shelf behind your longarm. I also have a full wall of shelves. My sewing desk is on wheels and has a flip up surface on the back. I also made the fat quarter shelf that is beside the closet door. It holds all my less than a yard fabrics. See my pictures.

I would consider putting a shelf all the way around the room - maybe on top of the closet door trim, maybe 18" or 12" from the ceiling, or lower to accommodate what you intend to put up there. You could always use wooden shelf brackets and drill a hole in them in order to hang a quilt from a rod on the bed wall. I have this in my cottage in the living room, and also at my main house in my bedroom to hold my collection of books because I do not have space for a library and we are retired and both readers. In the bedroom I only put them on two walls and you cannot see them from the door. Since you are tall, you could probably reach them. I really use mine and am considering putting more up. If you have any room to move your bookcases apart, you could put a spring tension rod between them, one high and one low to hang quilts tops or UFO's on, for instance. I like my shelves 8" with a plate grove just in case I want to change things later or to hold a picture and other goodies. Be creative and go for it.

Standard Bookcases are not deeper than 10". Or shelving with adjustable brackets.

Here are 2 pictures of 4 wooden crates that I just painted and hubby hung last week. They are over the end of my cutting table and only come out about 9-1/2" from the wall. I bought them at a craft store.

if you have an old wooden ladder it can be hung (lengthwise on the wall and used as shelves for patterns, books and fat quarter etc.

I can't do pictures, but I have a shelf all the way around my sewing room that is above the door & windows. Gives me lots of storage space.
