overflow of magazines
 

Need to find a way to store my quilting magazines. I have a couple of those magazine holders, but wanted to know if anyone had a less expenxive way to organize these. Seems like I am always going through them all to find the one I want. All ideas will be welcome and appreciated.

I store mine in magazine holders. I try to label the different magazines for each holder. I'm thinking you can get cheaper holders at Ikea. I'm not sure if they mail order them or not.

I recently watched a clip where they made the magazine holders from old laundry soap boxes. Can we still get the bigger laundry soap boxes? I can't remember where I saw it. If you look at one of the plastic magazine holders and cut the box the same as that, it should be pretty easy. Then you can cover the boxes with fabric or paint them.

I used to save all my magazines with paper clips at the ones I would like to make. Well, needless to say, they got out of control. My solution was to go through them all again from cover to cover. I tore out all the ones I still wanted to make and donated the remaining magazines to our quilt guild. I put the torn out pages in clear plastic sheet protectors and put them in 3 ring binders. I've got binders for "quilting motifs", "quilt ideas" and "quilt patterns". I certainly do have a lot more space in my bookcase now.

They might have someting similar at Walmart or an office supply store.

I do the same thing if there's only one or two patterns or ideas I like from the magazine. If there's more than that I use those little sticky flags or post it notes to mark the ones I like.

I keep three years of my magazines and then give the oldest year away. If I like something in the magazine I copy it and file it. That way I do not feel like a hoarder. HA HA!

This is what I do as well. Although after 16 years of quilting, I have way to many binders. Although, I do weed out the contents every year or so.

I just use plastic magazine holders for old magazines. My quilt books are in one of the upper cabinets I have in my sew room, okay in two of the upper cabinets I have in my sewing room. I also have have pages printed in plastic sleeves in three ring binders. I don't go through them often enough.

Thank you! Thank you!! What wonderful ideas. I knew I would get lots of good info from this board. I will let you know what I decide. I am a newbie and just can't part with any magazines yet. But I will keep the info in mind about weeding them out "someday".

hey! they stole that from me, lol! Mine fit perfectly! I can't find any with handles on them lately though. Guess I'll have to make my own :thumbup:

Mine are stored in the acid free page protectors and in notebooks by the magazine and date. I have thousands as I really collected for about 10 years and then kept buying more.... Only magazines I do subscribe to. And I don't throw them out.

A sewing friend and I were in Sam's and discovered there are boxes (free for the taking) that approximate the shape of the magazine holders but are deeper and wider. A scissors or box knife and some tape can personalize the box size and if you're a creative perfectionist, the box can be dolled up.

The friend and I tip toed out of Sam's with our purchases and our free magazine/folder/brochure holders. Hers are pretty and full. Mine are full.

I photcopy the cover and the table of contents. Then I highlight the tings I want to make. Iput the pages back to back with the table of content on top in a documet pastic sleeve and file them in notebooks by year and in chronilogical order.

Old Magazines
 

A lot of people around here tend to pass on their old mags. But I find it really annoying if they have removed certain pages or even the patterns fold from the centre. I will go through any I get and photocopy the patterns I like then pass on the magazine. The copies I store in the various ringbinders I have for patchwork, applique and quilting. Then at least I can find the designs I like later.

I store mine in those large tins that popcorn comes in.

I put some of mine in a large rectangular box that fits under my bed and I found a extra large heavy basket at goodwill and throw them in there. I have a ton and love to look through them. I also keep some on bookshelves.

I limit my magazine collection to 12 issues. I don't see the point of keeping a lot of magazines. It will become overwhelming after a few years.

How about using your empty soap boxes (Cheer or Tide). Cut one side down and they fit real well.

I scan the pages, how-tos, patterns and templates into a folder in Documents called Quilting/Magazines/ and then a folder called by the pattern or how-to name. Very easy to browse and by adding tags to the filenames, easy to find a specific item. Then I donate the magazines to the library's annual sale. Works for me.

I like this idea. My favorites change and the paper clips are on all the wrong pages when I thumb through my magazines again. Just can't part with them, boxed up about 80 a few weeks ago......just couldn't let go!

I make a copy of the photo of quilts I want to make in the magazines and put them in plastic protective sheets and then in a 3 ring binder. I write on the photo what magazine it is from and what page it is on. It makes for a wonderful eye candy just to page through.

I then bundle up the magazines according to their name and year. I tie them with yarn and put a little note as to what is contained in the bundle so when I want to look for a certain quilt it is quick. I have the bundles on the shelf in my bedroom but plan on putting them in under-the-bed containers when my hubby gets around to putting in a second clothing bar in my closet.

I too used to use the plasticmagazine holders, but got frustrated trying to find what I needed. So, I got plastic hanging file holders with holes on each side for carrying. Then I went to thrift stores and yard sales & bought handing file folders-you know, the green ones---I place the folder inside the magazine center and hang them--each brand has its own holder and it keeps the magazines from getting torn or bent..when I need one, I just thumb through them. I have a book listing all the issues I keep and what quilts in each one that I liked. Makes it so much easier.
