Question about peg boards
Hello everyone I have question My family went to a sale this past Saturday I was able to buy a full l 4x8 sheet of peg board for $1.00 Not sure how to use it was wanting some suggestions
|
If you have a blank wall you can use it there for lots of storage. Be sure to add some boards behind it (around the edges like a frame on the backside) so it provides room for the hooks. Plus I would paint it. Spray painting is easiest for pegboard but that is a big board and would take a lot of spray paint. Brushing on paint gets it in the holes and then it's a pain to make sure they're all cleared out. Experience speaking here.
Or you can cut it into smaller pegboards. Just don't forget the boards in the back when you hang it. When I first got pegboard in my room (my old house) it wasn't very easy to find the hangers and other accessories for it. But nowadays they can be found easily and there are a lot of neat options. |
Peg board is sure handy. If you can't find a place for the whole sheet, you can cut it to fit. Think outside the box like the back of your sewing room door, the end of a wooden desk, both side ends of a book shelf .... You do need to put some boards on the back before fastening it to a surface as the hooks need a space behind the pegboard to hand correctly.

You got a heck of a deal on that pegboard.

I use my pegboard to hang cutting mats, rulers, stencils, cutters and other notions. It keeps things within easy reach but off the floor and not squirreled away under a bed or in a drawer.

I had pegboard hanging my quilting stencils and all other notions like you see in quilt shops. Haven't yet been able to decide in my new apt where I want to put my pegboard. Go to a hardware store and they will have a section for items to hang your things from the pegboard.

My hubby cut a 4X8 sheet in half, then he spray painted it the color of my choosing, which was a cheery pink color. Then he framed it out and hung it on a wall for me. I love it. I have a limited flat storage space so I use the pegboard for hanging everything from needles to rotary cutters, to painters tape, to measuring tapes. Anything that can be hung on it, will be hung on it. Oh yes, I also hang my rulers on it. I love my pegboard. And, it can be as plain as when you bought it, or you can paint it and decorate is to be a real decor focal point. One of these day, I want to take everything off of mine and paint some flower or something along those line to make it even more festive.

My work area is the unfinished section of the basement......so the interior dividing wall is just studs. That whole top section is now pegboarded and bottom (like wainscoting height) I had DH put in shelves between the studs. Yes, they are narrow width( the depth of stud- or whatever it is called!) but do hold thread cones, small things quite well....almost 10 yrs and best use of wall space! Cannot beat the pegboard.....everything is in view instantly!

Also! go to Building Supply stores or local hardware & look thru all the different pegs they have. So many different kinds, & you can see what will work for all these great ideas you are getting!

Here is my pegboard before I put anything on it.
http://www.quiltingboard.com/mission...m-t246075.html when I first put it up I had a full sheet, had that up for awhile but when I redid my room I decided I wanted it cut in half so I could use the extra wall space for something else.We painted it a light pink, DH framed it out and that is almost a burgundy color. I love it. |
When my husband had my sewing room built, I had them put peg board on all 4 walls, upper half only. I hang everything, that is hangable, on them and I love it. I can find whatever I am looking for at a glance

I had mdh cut mine the size of the bottom of drawers, then using dowels cut the size for spools of threads. Put the pegs in at random in the whole of board and placed all my spools of threads in the drawers away from dust and lights.

You can buy hook kits for pegboard in hardware stores or online. Be sure to get the right size; pegboard comes with either 1/8" or 1/4" holes. I prefer the straight hooks (like L) over the curved. I hang all my scissors, rotary cutters, rulers, templates, small/medium cutting mats, you name it. I have 2 2x4 pegboards on the walls in my sewing room. I also used a 2x4 pegboard for my big ironing table so steam will pass through it.

I found the hardware stores and princess auto (our version of Harbor Freight) REALLY expensive for pegboard accessories compared to a store fixtures type of shop. It's probably close to wholesale, but no account strictly needed. They also have some neat storage bins and shelves you don't see at the hardware stores.
We have "Eddies" here: http://www.eddies.com/ perhaps there's something close to you that does a similar business? I searched and I have a photo of one of the pegboards in the studio, and only a poor glimpse of the other one. I also have a 2x4 sheet sitting on the floor under the other pegboard waiting to be hung, but I want to find a way to do something like peg board but from the ceiling instead since I have virtually unlimited ceiling space and very limited wall space, so it may go into the laundry room instead. The long pegboard sheet came in brown, but I painted it with a roller and regular wall paint (or it might have been primer) To make sure the holes weren't plugged, I just went back over it with a "dry" roller - ie due to be dunked in the paint tray again, and it pulled everything out of the holes. If you support the pegboard with a strip (like 1"X2") behind it at the top and the bottom, it gives enough clearance to put the hooks in the pegboard and also gives you some nice storage space for flat things like cutting mats, larger rulers, etc.--keeps them handy, but out of the way.

I bought large picture frames at garage sales and took the "art" and glass out, replaced with peg board, spray painted they look so pretty. tip - hot glue wine corks cut lengthwise to the back corners to accommodate the peg hooks and to help keep it hanging square.

Lucky you! Wish I had a place for a peg board.

When my DH hung my pegboard, he took some old large plastic spools and cut them in halves. Great spacers behind pegboards when screwed thru a hole in pegboard. Also easy patching holes when we moved!

Thank you for all of the fabulous ideas I love all of the pictures. You all have a beautiful place to quilt or do your crafts Did I also tell all of you the sale we went to all proceeds from the auction goes to our local VFW post These wonderful people give flowers every Sunday to people in the hospital and in our nursing home They hold this action every year We have gone for the last 20 years.

What a find! The ideas are endless with a peg board. My DH painted me 1 and made a frame around it, just to make it look more finished. Popped it on the wall and away we go. We put pegs on and hang a little bit of everything.

I've got one on the wall directly in front of my sewing machine. I keep everything from rulers, to bags of scraps there. I also use those black clips to hold instructions for blocks.
