Re-do of craft room
 

My DH has finally agreed to put the full-sized bed (too small and hard to be comfortable) we have in our guest room into the attic for storage, and replace it with the comfy queen-sized bed from my craft room. I can't wait to get started! I do all my sewing/quilting in there, as well as my stained glass and other craft projects. I am looking forward to reclaiming the space in my clothes closet that I've had to use for fabric storage, as well as getting my small sewing machine off the work station that was built for my glass work. If anyone has any advice I'd welcome it! I've been doing glass work in this room for years and never cared about the space the bed took up, but now that I have taken up quilting, too, work space is at a premium. I'm attaching some photos of the room as it is now and update them when we get the bed out. :)

I envy you! To have an entire room!!

I use to have an entire room but now I have to share with the computer. We downsized our home.

For the most use of your space: Usually a U shaped area for sewing machine, cutting mat (even a small one) next to the machine when pressing seams open, and an ironing area (could be as simple as covering a board with batting and fabric. If you have extra space to the left of your machine this will help to hold your quilt when sewing on binding or perhaps quilting small quilts, runners etc. Having a section for rulers, and notions are a must. You could get a strong long narrow wooden box to hold your rulers on a table so that the larger rulers can lean against the wall for support. Having some sort of container whether it be a basket, tin box, etc. to have the most used tools handy. Of course if you have an area for shelves (it is good to have 12 inch deep shelves for fabric) It could be a book shelf or a closet with shelves. If you have room for a design wall it is a plus. If you do not have room for a large design wall, you could cover some type of board whether it be plywood, cardboard, foam board etc. just cover it with batting or a plastic table cloth using the backside. A lightbox is also good to have if you do alot of applique.
There are several ways to make one (check on-line) it is much cheaper than buying one. If you seldom do applique you could get by with something as simple as a piece of glass/plexi-glass with a lamp underneath. A glass coffee table works too. Hope this helps. Have fun.

I am excited for you. Whenever I redo my sewing room I draw it out on draft paper. Then make little pieces of furniture to scale to fit the paper. After I get the pieces cut and labeled, I put repositional glue on the back of the pieces and just have fun rearranging until I come up with something that works. Looking forward to seeing pcitures of the new room.

I envy those with rooms I have a small corner of our bedroom in our small apartment. I dream of a room of my own.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions and good wishes! I have a room of my own only because the kids are grown & gone and our house is too big for just two people. I had to take over the bedroom or leave it empty (couldn't do that!). I am happy to have the space for myself, but if the housing market was better, we'd be downsizing, too! DH is talking about retiring soon and I have to have a place to hide! LOL ;)

WOW...Great room.....I am envious of anyone that has a designated space to use for sewing. I use to have a room years ago and sure do miss it. I get tired of having to hide my sewing when I get company.Enjoy your space..

Great room and so many crafts going on in there - by removing the bed you will gain alot of space. Have fun being creative!

I also do stained glass & quilt/sew. I had both in a 100sq.ft. room. Did not work out... My DH just removed my stained glass so I would have more room to sew.. and I could still use more space... :) I love both crafts, so I refuse to give one up.

I'm glad you get to expand - I wouldn't want any of those tiny glass bits anywhere near my sewing machine :)

Before we moved here, my sewing room was in the same room my daughter used when she was home from college. Now she's married, but back then I put plywood on the bed to use it as a cutting space. VERY backbreaking. I can just imagine, when the bed is out, how much room you will have for a cutting table. then store stuff under the cutting table, possibly in cubbies on wheels.

LOVE IT - my idea is take the machine at the end of the bed and move it with the back to the bed that way when you quilt your quilt fill lay on the bed over the foot rail and not lay on the floor or against the wall. I think it is great. you get tired just lay down. lol
