Retirement Investment

2 Attachment(s)
For years, I said that I was buying fabric as an investment for my retirement. Retirement has arrived!! I spent hours over two weeks getting all fabric folded - or refolded - to fit the new wire cube storage. If it didn't fit and I didn't love it, I donated it to a quilts for the needy group.

Wire storage was inexpensive and fit the inside of the closet completely from side to side. Although our house is a 3-bedroom and both children are grown and gone, DH does not want to make either of the empty rooms a sewing room. But I did take over the closet! The storage cubes I had before (from Target, they come flat and you put them together) didn't fit well - lots of wasted space at the end, but not enough to add another set. Plus they were only 3 tall, which meant I kept stacking stuff. You can imagine what that looked like!

Eventually I found these http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 to fit the closet perfectly. The 20-cube set would have been less expensive, but I wasn't sure I would like them, so ordered the set of 8 (and then a second set of 8). They are 13" wide, so I wrapped fabrics around my 6.5" wide Creative Grids ruler and folded to length.

Oh how nice it all looks!!! Hope you have lots of fun now that you have more time!!!!!!
Our taste changes and I will occasionally destash fabric I know I'll never use to donate. Win win!

Nice job of organization.

What will you be doing with empty rooms"

I'm tickled pink that you posted this. I just got the same system for a closet. But I wondered how to fold fabrics to make them fit. Your idea is ingenious! Thank you!

Karamarie 09-23-2017 04:18 AM

Those are the neatest stacks of fabric I have ever seen. Enjoy your retirement!

rryder 09-23-2017 05:02 AM

Beautiful stash! Have fun using it now that you've got time!

Wanabee Quiltin 09-23-2017 05:08 AM

Your fabric looks fantastic! When we moved into our home ten years ago, I took the smallest bedroom as my sewing room, and now I have a long arm in the family room on our walkout level too. DH knows very well the extent of my passion! Enjoy your retirement.

ekuw 09-23-2017 05:22 AM

I wish my fabric was that organized-nice! NOw that you have the time+lots of fabric there will be no stopping you. Congratulations :-)

osewme 09-23-2017 05:31 AM

You did the right thing by buying fabric BEFORE retirement. I made the big mistake of not doing that & now I'm kicking myself each time I get ready to make something. It looks like you have a great variety for whatever you decide to make at any time. I love your storage systems....so neat & so much! Congrats. on retirement...have fun!

calla 09-23-2017 05:36 AM

My thoughts too. After many years of working in which I'm assuming you contributed to the household I would think you would have a say in how to use "your" (not just "his") space.
Your organization looks fantastic. If only I could get so neat.

Exactly what I was thinking.

JanieH 09-23-2017 08:45 AM

I also bought lots of fabric before I retired (and after!). Just wished mine looked as pretty and organized as yours!
A job well done.

Innov8R 09-23-2017 08:55 AM

I love your beautiful, organized retirement investment. I hope you have years of enjoyment following your dream.

Absolutely. It always astonishes me, that women have to seek permission to use a room of the home that they have made a huge contribution to, as a space for a sewing/craft or whatever they feel like doing, on retirement.

My comment makes 3 of this type..what do you mean the husband doesn't want one of two spare rooms made into your sewing room? Have you put any money/time/resources into the house? Don't you think you deserve to have a sewing room, not a closet? And who died and made him the boss of you? Ha!

stillvnu 09-23-2017 04:04 PM

Congrat's on your retirement ... on your organization - looks great! Have fun quilting!

My husband does, too! When we bought this big fixer upper house at a bargain price, he suggested that I take the 2 upstairs bedrooms on the front for my sewing. I think he figured that way it wouldn't be all over the house like when we were in the townhouse :D

dunster 09-23-2017 06:48 PM

Thanks for the link to the storage cubes. I'm going to keep them in mind. Your stash looks so well organized - how long do you think it will stay that way? I find that I have to keep re-organizing as I pull fabrics and put them back. But it's fun petting the fabric. Have fun in retirement.

Betty J 09-24-2017 04:00 AM

Congratulations, you are very well organised. I too have fabric waiting for retirement which I sincerely hope is next year.

Moonglow 09-24-2017 04:38 AM

Beautifully organized. Enjoy your retirement.

Debbie C 09-24-2017 05:52 AM

I'm sorry, but I feel the need to add my two cents, too. You have been cooking, cleaning, laundering in this home AND working outside the home for all these years and he doesn't want you to make an unused bedroom your quilt space for your obvious passion for our craft? Does he have a garage? Mancave? Basement? Workshop? This man would be getting not only a piece of my mind, but a good kick in his rear end! Dear lady, tell him you are making, taking and using one of those extra rooms for your guilty, quilty pleasure!

lots2do 09-24-2017 06:09 AM

Thanks for showing us the result of your hard work. It must have taken a lot of time but I imagine you enjoyed it. All those pretty colors!
Congratulations on your retirement! It's been a little over two years for me. I have not been as productive as I'd like but am hopeful that will change moving ahead. Being more organized is one of my goals, too.
Maybe there's a way to compromise on one of the bedrooms. In Florida, my sewing space is easily broken down for company (which we don't have all that often). Here, it's been more of a struggle since we have a lot more company. Not knowing your situation and since you didn't ask for feedback on your sewing space, take that with a grain of salt.
Enjoy!

Monika 09-24-2017 07:10 AM

Congratulations on your retirement! And your stash looks great. Have fun sewing all that!!

Here's mine a three door closet. I bought an old Dr.s office and took the doors off the examining rooms and made this closet. It's certainly not as organized as yours, but I know where stuff is. Now my goal is to use it all up in the next 29 years!!

Marcia

jamsbuying 09-24-2017 04:09 PM

Very organized!! Enjoy.

D.Henson 09-24-2017 06:54 PM

Congratulations on your retirement! Your fabric looks amazing! My sewing room had a "guest bed" in it for a very long time, and still has a big dresser (which I use mostly for sewing needs). I do all my sewing in the dining room because I love the big window. :o

Jane Quilter 09-24-2017 10:51 PM
