My contract ended and I moved back to west central Wisconsin to our permenant home and decided to reclaim the basement as my sewing "lair" I started with this... I repainted and ended up with a main sewing area, a longarm room ( with no longarm...yet!) and a restoration room for vintage machines. I still need to figure out a better cutting area where I could layer quilts as well, but for now I am pretty pleased with my little retreat! Any ideas for improvement greatly appreciated...I am at an impasse as far as moving things around, the white cabinet will be moved out, maybe a cutting table there?...out of inspiration!

looks like you've got a great area there all ready for lots of creativity!

Can't see how large the white cabinet is but if it's big enough can you find another similar in size, attach a large piece of plywood and turn it into a cutting table? or like your cabinets with your stash, put two together and attach plywood to it. Once again how about a large executive size desk or wooden dining table.

I have two rooms on the second floor of our house but wish I had a nice huge basement with lots of light to spread out more. Enjoy your room.

What a great space! I think I need a basement to.

kathymarie 10-24-2013 04:29 AM

What a gorgeous "lair" you've created....great use of the space but really lovely too. You've inspired me!

littlebitoheaven 10-24-2013 05:13 AM

I agree with "tessagain". You have a gorgeous area and my only other suggestion would be to put (whatever or however you design your cutting table) it in the center of your room so that you can walk around it.

It looks like a great room.

Wow, you did wonders with your basement. It give me food for thought to take over our basement since it's really not used by anyone. But I have questions for you. What kind of lighting are you using down there? What kind of floors do you have? How to you keep out the musty smell? I run a dehumidifier all summer but it seems to still have that musty odor down there.

Mariposa 10-25-2013 05:44 AM

Great sewing space!! Looks like you are having fun making it yours! :)

roserips 10-25-2013 09:25 AM

Looks like you have done a great job live in it and use it for a while and the changes you need to make will make themselves known

What a fantastic room!! Have fun!!

tjk829 10-28-2013 07:59 AM

I run a dehumidifier as well, I also have some windows ( very small) that I open when I can, which will most likely be in May. I have two banks of fluorescent lights and task lamps near the sewing machine and cutting table. My machine has fantastic lighting and that hasn't been a problem. I usually have a wax melter and several candles going while I am working, but that is for my own enjoyment. As I began to use the room more the musty smell lessened and disappeared. The basement is connected to the duct work and ventilation for the rest of the house. I have laminate flooring over concrete and used the best vapor/moisture barrier I could find ( got it on amazon) I haven't had any issues with the floor. I solved the problem of the cutting table by getting a Sullivan hobby table and I made my ironing cover for it. It stays folded when not in use and I moved the low white cabinet into the longarm room, where it is easily accessible but not in the way. Hope that answers your questions....the only other thing that has come up is my DH complaining that he didn't get any room in the basement...lol He can keep the garage!

I sew in the basement as well. The only thing I don't have is a display wall. I will have to figure that out one day. Love your space looks way neater than mine!

sewNso 01-24-2014 03:29 PM

I have half the basement also. likewise, I keep a dehumidifier going. and we used moisture barrier paint on the cement walls, and floors. I have linoleum tile down. like to be able to Swiffer up dust and threads easy. pieces of carpet here and there. just put flannel up on my design wall today. I used sheets of insulation.
