Storing Batting on a roll, what works for you? I have cats
 

I have been scouring Pinterest and other online sources for ideas on how to best store a roll of batting I just bought. Initially I was going to put it on a bar under my LQM, but just heard of a woman who did that, only to discover her cats and clawed it.

My cats have full access to every room in the house, so I want to avoid that happening. I want it to be above pet hair too.

I have looked at wall and ceiling mounted solutions, what are the pros and cons? Luckily I can mount it opposite from the LQM.

I tried doing a search here, but could not refine the results.

I can't give an opinion on ceiling/wall mounted options, but can honestly say: there's no such thing as "to be above pet hair".

While changing a ceiling light fixture bulb, I discovered cat hairs stuck to the ceiling. Those pesky hairs are very light, and the slightest air movement (i.e. fans, breeze, hvac unit) will carry them everywhere and anywhere.

With that said, you may want to figure a way to cover the batting also to keep it free of pet hair & dust.

I guess it depends on the cat. I’ve kept my rolls on the bar under my longarm for years- my cat has never bothered it. And generally he’s into everything.

Last time I bought batting yardage they gave me the roll it came in & the plastic that covered it from the manufacturer which I keep in the workroom closet. Some quilters make "batting tube covers" for storing batting yardage. I have a Giant Zip Lock for smaller batting needs. I have no space on my workroom walls to mount batting as it would protrude from the wall too far.

I lay down a California King sheet when ready to cut batting for a project (sometimes two overlapping sheets for projects with hanging sides); lay down the backing, wrong side up; roll the batting onto the backing; cut what I need, using the backing as a guide; roll & re-wrap the unused batting for storage; put the quilt top on the batting, right side up; roll my project; take it to my longarm table to be basted or quilted; put the sheets in the washing machine. Some quilters use & reuse wide muslin to lay down projects & store in containers until needed.

This process seems to keep everything clean. I use my Cal King bed or the large room floor for project layouts.

I have many rolls of batting (but no cats). I keep them on end in a guest room closet near my quilting room. When I'm ready to use one, I carry it to the quilting room, place it on the longarm table, and unroll it until I can measure out the amount needed.

I have a roll under my LQM(but no cat to worry about). I slit the box it came in and took off one side, then I covered the roll with the rest of the box. I write how much I take off each time I cut a piece off so I'll have and idea of how much is left. It is open to the floor but I've never noticed and problems and I've had it there for years. You could leave the fourth side on the box and tape it shut so the cat can't get at it then slide the box to one side when you cut from the roll.

like Dunster, I keep my rolls leaning to a corner in a closet , since it is a spare bedroom I lay the roll on the bed to measure and cut what I need. I don't have pets.

I had a chat with my handyman this afternoon and showed him a couple options on Pinterest. Then I showed him to roll of batting (it is still in my car to keep the cats off it). We measured the paper tube in the middle to get an idea of what size pole to use.

The tip about recording how much I use each time is brilliant and I would never have thought of that myself, or not until I was sure I had enough for one more project and found myself short. :rolleyes:

We are going to go with brackets on the wall to hold a pole for the roll. I will post photos after Christmas once it is all done.

I do agree the cat hair does get everywhere, but the cats stick closer to the ground and under the LA frame is too close to them.

i put my roll on my long arm and cover it with an old sheet and that way my cat cannot claw at it

I store mine on end in the closet, but it is wrapped in an old matress pad an all sides and top and bottom. I have an old pop-up laundry hamper (the net kind) and I stand that up inside of the hamper.

Look at the posting in a previous thread titled Large Roll of Batting two postings below this one. Several members posted photos as to how they store batting rolls. Don't know if any of those would keep the cat hair or even the cats away from the batting roll but it's worth a look. Cats are wonderful pets but when they are still youngish, they seem to be able to get anywhere they want to, high, low or inbetween.

I keep my roll of batting in the corner of my craft room. It has a door on it, but often my cats go in there. They aren't really interested in the batting. When I need to cut batting, I vacuum the family room floor and roll it out. The batting is 120 inches wide, folded in half in the roll... so it's quite large when it's full.

How about a cover? Something simple...fabric the length of the roll and just a little wider. Attach Velcro every few inches as needed. When you're not using just cover it up. If you use dense enough fabric it won't matter if kitty scratches on it now and then. When you need it, just zip open the Velcro and remove the cover. Just a thought. Might work.

I use a table cloth (Vinyl) to cover mine, Buy off season ones on sale . Fold in half sew across
bottom and up the side turn wrong side out so it doesn't stick to the flannel backing. Slides in and out easy.
If you want to use pole on frame leave both ends open .

I keep the heavy plastic that it is wrapped in. Actually mine comes in two plastic bags, so I keep the interior one. I also have a cat and everything is open except my closet which is where the batting lives propped up against the corner. Not elegant, but it works.

My rolls of batting are stored in 2 places. The one I use most often is on the bar below the LA. The others are wool, bamboo and 120" wide and are hung from the ceiling. I put large binder clips on each end to keep from unrolling. With the clips, I can cut a length by myself. DH is also willing to help. Because the room is used mainly for LA, it stays faily dust free, so they aren't covered.

I have mine on the top of PVC shelving unit my Husband made. The unit is 20 in. wide so I can put 2 rolls of 10 yds side by side and 1 on top of them. I would like to hang a roll from ceiling and slightly in front of the back roller. But, I never have my sewing room neat enough for my hubby to work in it. He's a neat person, I'm not. that's why we bought a 3 bedroom house. Tinker

My MIL mounted extra closet rod hangers above the bi-fold closet door in her sewing room and just runs the rod through her next roll of batting. She keeps a bungee cord strapped to it- other wise the weight will cause it to unroll. She just undoes the bungee cord, unrolls the amount she needs, cuts it off and puts the bungee cord back on. Very easy and it’s up out of the way.

No longarm here, but I do keep my rolls of batting stored up on end in a guest room closet, as others have said they do. It's the same room where I use the bed to lay out quilts and sandwich them, so I just take the roll out and cut of what i need, then put the rest back in the closet. They stand on their plastic that they came in.

I buy my batting by the bolt so had to find a better place to put it for use. Since my sewing room is in the basement and my rafters above are open to me I decided to add brackets and a pole to hang the batting above my cutting table. I also keep a pair of clamps to hold my very long metal ruler to the cutting table for when I go to cut the batting. My cutting table is 4 x 8 so I can't cut it across from one side..........reason for the clamps to keep the ruler from moving on me. Here's pics of my setup.
