Storing Rulers

What is the best way to store your rulers? I have the smaller ones - 6" or less figured out but I have triangles, wedge and large squares as well as 24" ones. On a pegboard, in pockets behind a door, in bins?

Quiltwoman44 11-23-2020 08:04 AM

I have a wooden holder that sits on one corner of my cutting table. has slots along it for rulers to stand in. i put my larger square rulers mostly in that one. then i have another one hanging on the wall. has slanted slots for rulers. then i have a peg board for other shapes on the end wall by my sewing table. Many ways can work for you. I have pocket hanger on closet door and room door for fusibles, etc. In closet one i put starch, basting sprays , etc. Good luck.

Yep, I'm a slot girl, too, for the rulers I use the most sitting on my cutting table.

Years ago I bought 2 rings about 6" diameter that snap open where I hang my long, odd shaped rulers. One ring goes over the rod in the closet ,(I sew in a bedroom) and the other will snap open and I insert the odd rulers.

I have a pretty hat box, no lid, where I have other special rulers, Dresden Path, double wedding ring and the patterns and books for those rulers. A while ago MSQC had a great sale on a bundle of templates. These go in the hat box too but they are in a zip lock bag.

Thinking of what you have shared about your new setting, what about an upright file holder, sitting on your shelving in the closet?

On the corner of the cutting table, I have an upright file holder/bin that I put all larger rulers into. It's only about 4" or 5" thick. Then in front of it, I have a smaller letter holder with a couple of dividers that I stand the smaller ones into. My large 16-1/2" and 24" squares just slide on the floor, into a crack between the cutting table and wall.

Storing Rulers

I have a slot gadget, but I only bring it out occasionally, like when working in another room. I store my rulers hung on screws on the sides of my sewing cabinet. I had to drill a hole in one of the metal ones. A couple are hung two and three deep. I have a few smaller ones hung on the inner walls of the cabinet, too. One super-long one is hung higher on the wall.

I have heavy project holders with slide zippers. They are hole punched and will fit in a notebook. Specialty rulers are in one of these and then stored in a metal magazine holder.

The long cutting ruler stays on the table. The 12 inch rulers are in a plastic bin on the desk.

Another storage method I have seen ....... shower hooks/rings through the hole of the ruler, with the hooks hanging a clothes rod. Or could be hooked over a clothes hanger.

Though .......... Too fiddly for me!!!

I bought a swivel display rack like the quilt shops use. I can see all my rulers at once but the one I want is always at the back of others. LOL Always a compromise.

FoxyLady 11-23-2020 11:18 AM

I am currently using Command strips with a hook -- the large size. I hang my mats, my strip cutting templates, other rulers and templates on the wall behind my door. That way they are out of sight but easily accessible when I need them.

pocoellie 11-23-2020 12:19 PM

Pegboard for me, a slotted ruler holder would just get covered on my cutting table. LOL

Tartan 11-23-2020 04:58 PM

Pegboard for me as well for my cutting rulers. For my ruler work rulers, I have a hard plastic case to keep them safe.

sewingsuz 11-23-2020 07:54 PM

I have a slotted board for my small templets. My HB made that for me. I bought all kind of thing that they would go on and hang in the closet bu to get one templet or ruler of the ring you have to take others off first. That did not work. I finally put some hooks and L shaped hardware on the wall and have then hung in three places. That works for me.

Snooze2978 11-24-2020 06:16 AM

My 24 x 6 I have hanging along side my cutting table. Those I use the most I have on one end of the cutting table in a slotted container. Those I might use occasionally I have hanging behind me on the pegboard. Those I use once in a while I have in a drawer by designer such as Bonnie Hunter's rulers, Jenny Beyer's rulers, etc. My quilting rulers I have in a rolling cart under the quilt frame along with the ruler table. I made a list of all the rulers I have so when one comes up on sale I check to see if I already have it before buying it.......again.

juliasb 11-24-2020 07:02 AM

I have a couple nails I hang my larger rulers on. Medium and smaller or duplicate rulers are stored standing up on a cart in my studio. Currently my new quilting curved rulers are sitting on my sewing table. I haven't determined where I will be storing them.

Rosasta0 11-24-2020 07:36 AM

I have a "file box" that holds hanging manilla folders. I label the folders and am able to store all of my rulers in there - square, triangle Deb Tucker, etc. Works nicely for the small & medium sized rulers, but the large ones have to be stored elsewhere. Very easy to find what i'm looking for since they are labeled.

Hooligan 11-24-2020 08:24 AM

I use the Dritz ruler stand https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/thumbup.png

FoxyLady, I too use Command hooks to store my rulers but I hang them on the sides of cabinets, cutting table, and machine cabinet. Wherever there is space for a ruler and a Command hook, I hang a ruler! The space behind the door, is occupied with Command hooks storing the hoops for my embroidery machine.

At our local quilt show one can purchase a ruler storage slotted board. The board is flat against the wall and the rulers sit in their slots at an upward angle. I'll try this picture.

it looks likes you didn't upload the image after selecting it. I have to be on full page to find the upload tab. It was all the way to the right of the full page. The pop up window didn't show it.

I made a shelf with scrolly supports and rested a curtain rod on the scrolls. I had to use hot glue to keep the rod in place, then I hung my rulers on on it with S hooks. I like it because they’re visible but out of the way, and they don’t take up much room. I don’t have enough wall space for a pegboard.

mcadwell 12-09-2020 04:29 PM

I have a teeny-tiny sewing room and have a shelving unit on wheels that can be moved around. I hang all my rulers off of hooks on one side.

Jingle 12-10-2020 02:37 PM

The ones I use all the time I keep laying around and move off when I don't need them. Ones I don't use stay in the ruler holder, out of the way. June Taylor strip cutter stands on floor between a couple of totes. All works me.

I went to Ikea and bought their hooks and the bars that go with them. One is on the wall and I hooked their metal pails to them--storage for pencils, calculator, etc. The second and third bars with the hooks are on the wall right beside my cutting table and on a filing cabinet right there as well. One bar and hooks holds my various scissors, rotary cutters, etc and the other bar on the cabinet holds the big rulers that don't fit into the slot holder I have on my cutting table. Easy to see and to get to. Slot holder is for the rulers I use constantly.
For my quilting machine rulers, they are all in plastic sleeves, in binders labelled on the spine.

I BOUGHT tension rod and shower hooks. Was going to hang them all. Could not get the tension rod to stay up! Back to the drawing board....

Maybe NanoTape would help them stay up? I used that on a tension rod I had that wouldn't stay put, and it helped.

I have old, old spring clamp-type skirt hangers that I use to hang my large rulers in the closet. One per hanger up against the sidewall of the closet. The smaller ones are in a bin in my old china cabinet (now quilting storage cabinet). The 3 or 4 that I tend to use constantly are usually found laying on my cutting table unless the GRANDS are over visiting. When they're here everything gets put up so they can't run off with anything. (my quilting area is the dining room. open to all!)

Fizzle 07-20-2021 06:32 AM

Mcadwell - before i got around to trying the Nano tape i have filled the space with a small shelf unit to get my jelly rolls all corralled! The unit is a total space filler for temporary. I am trying to get ALL my sewing things out so i can see what i actually have. My space has filled up fast! So had to come up with another idea. Enter plan b

Plan B. My husband made a coat rack that is on the wall and has about 12 hooks. Each hook sticks out several inches. It is in the LR which i have turned in to my sewing studio. So last week i took off all the coats and hung all my rulers with holes in them on it. I hung several rulers on each hook. I used shower curtain hooks and they are fine but - its funny how something that is not super easy to open and close - i can see myself not getting them hung back up! I really need to work on better habits!!

Agree ... those shower hooks are not user friendly!
How about fine nails, and hang one on each?
Or longer nails, where you can hang more than one ruler?

GingerK 07-20-2021 02:22 PM

Go to HomeDepot (or the equivalent) and get a piece of peg board. There are all sorts of accessory hooks available. Attach the peg board to a wall (a couple of screws through studs) put in the hooks and hang those rulers.

Fizzle 08-20-2021 02:21 AM

I am finding that i do get them hung back up, i just don't close the hook! They hang just fine with the hook still open. It’s not like they are constantly being jostled around.
I am happy with the set up. And i am hanging more as i unearth them! And finding duplicates!

cashs_mom 08-20-2021 06:00 AM

I have a pegboard also. I want my rulers off my cutting table. I have a really large one with pins and weights on one end. I don't want my rulers sitting there too. If I have a ruler I'm using a lot for the current project, I sit it under the table leaning on the boxes that are stored there.

If you are a FB user, I think Alex Anderson is doing a live show at 10 am PST today with Lilo doing a little talk on ruler storage. To see the live show/chat on FB you do not need to be a member of thequiltshowdotcom.

Storing rulers

I ordered this from an office supply store (used for file folders - can be hung up, but not sure i would do that as heavy as rulers are). You wouldnt believe how many rulers it will hold and because its clear you can see all of them.
