Tartan 06-27-2013 11:02 AM

You go girl! Nothing like organizing your own space.

Smoothsewing 06-28-2013 04:10 AM

I still need motivation and I also need more free time........ Perhaps I will go crazy tonight and Start everything. the space is not as bad I think I feel to clean up. I know my whole being will feel better when I get moving and get all organized. please please kick me in the butt to get this going.

coopah 06-28-2013 04:46 AM

Just start in one small space. Then keep going. It works! All at once is way too overwhelming. Baby steps.

darlenedowns 06-28-2013 06:15 AM

Well all I can say to you is GET IT ORGANIZED and CLEAN you will not regret it and then when its done START QUILTING and SEW Its ok to get it messy now cause you know what you have and you are getting creative

You can DO it, Girl! My trick when I'm in a mess like that is to take a picture, or several, of the mess. Then when I get some of it done, I feel better. When it's beautiful, I take more pics so I'll have them for inspiration if/when I backslide. Here is one of my "before" pics to make you feel better

mighty 06-28-2013 06:23 AM

Go for it, you will love it!!!

Nammie to 7 06-28-2013 06:44 AM

I tell myself I can clean one small area and that is all I have to do. It is amazing how much more I do without realizing it. Doesn't take long before everything is picked up and put away. When my grandkids are sewing I pick a few things up and put them away. When the embroidery machine is running I do the same thing. Helps a lot. It is so much easier to start with a cleaned up space - I make a mess when sewing so it helps to start out a little organized.

Smoothsewing 06-28-2013 07:17 AM

This is really helping minus I am stuck away from the house. at this time. I will have sometime I believe this weekend aas camp is not looking so good with the rain forcast. PLEASE AND THANK YOU I NEED YOU ALL SO I CAN REALLY STOP TALKING AND GET MOVING!.

Jingle 06-28-2013 12:51 PM

Once you get it all cleaned up and organized. Tell yourself you have to put away everything used for the last project before you can start another. This is what I do and it works for me.

vondae 06-28-2013 09:41 PM

YOU GET IN THAT ROOM AND START CLEANING. NOW!!! And I'd better not have to tell you again. LOL! Do I remind you of your mom. Well, whatever it takes. Once you get started, you will feel so good you won't be able to stop.
And, IF I HAVE TO TELL YOU AGAIN, I'M GOING TO GROUND YOU TO YOUR SEWING ROOM. LOL!! Oh you wish.
Keep saying, I can do it. I can do it. I can do it. I can do it. Just keep telling yourself that... then DO IT!!!!!!!!! (I was shouting, could you hear me.)

DOTTYMO 06-29-2013 01:54 AM

Start by organising your fabric. Seeing it looking beautiful will n spire you to do the rest.
Just a tip from when I do mine leave the machines unplugged and not set up till last. I made that mistake and as soon as machine plugged on started sewing . Never finished the room that time.

Go one get going. Decide on a treat for when one small patch done. Piece of cake (large) .

lovecreating 06-29-2013 05:30 AM

Put on some peppy music that you enjoy. Often times helps get me charged and going. Pick something that has the greatest impact to start so you see progress, rather than a little section that requires time consuming detail. Good luck. I just reorganized my walk-in closet in my bedroom. I don't have a craft room yet, so my scrap booking, sewing, and a mass of photos are stored in my walk in closet. Good thing (I think) that I don't have a ton of clothes LOL

Cyn 06-29-2013 05:39 AM

I give myself treats along the way. Like when I have the floor picked up, I can have a candy bar, the rullers out away mean I can take a break. Ususally as I start seeing the progress, I can't stop for treats! AND I feel SO GOOD when it is all pretty and clean! GO for it! Even a little cleaning is better than none :)

SHELTIE'SMAMA 06-29-2013 05:59 AM

I'm one of these global random thinkers and that can be hard on my quilting space when I'm in one of my "I wonder if" moods. I keep my stuff in check by putting away 25(50) items the first time each day I hit my sewing space. Keeps the clutter down. Only takes a few minutes each day - kinda like whizzing thru the living room each day while I wait for the deep cleaning bug to hit.

tessagin 06-29-2013 06:34 AM

I keep telling myself, it has to be at least in order for me to be motivated. Can't stand clutter! If it's dusty, I get the Swiffer out and give it atleast a lick and a promise to do better the next time. Then comes Thursday when the estate sales start through Sat. and start all over again. I have a laundry basket that I put estate things in. it's going to the laundry anyway. I try to keep certain items together like all the batting in one area. It's a start.

tessagin 06-29-2013 06:45 AM

I would start with the big things first like putting the batting in on area. If you have a regular size ironing board use it like you're folding clothes. Don't worry about the folding boards yet just fold. getting the material in their places is a major do. If you're going to have the tv on it shouldn't be in another room. If that's the case then turn on the radio to music that is upbeat nothing that is relaxing. It'll make you want to take a nap. Just some extra tips. Now I'm just going to go shut the door on my sewing room. LOL!

grandmaemma 06-29-2013 08:55 AM

Baby steps:)

Peppy music, bright lights, putting the largest things away first --- working only on one side of the room.

Decisions: keep, not sure, and release.

When you want to "release" something from your collection, put it in a designated box. Handle it once, then move the box to the car for donation delivery, designated spot for trading with friends, etc. You will - I promise - get in the habit of putting the release items away as you see and/or touch them!

Dream big, but don't feel sorry for yourself. Think of why you want something for your sewing room. You just might have a bright idea and discover a new use for something you already own. (I just released some tablecloths and moved the table runners to the linen closet. That freed up the large bottom space in a chest of drawers. Now, I have all of the computer accessory cords, SD cards, CD blanks, DVD blanks, and camera equipment in one easily accessible spot. I'm so proud of myself that I almost broke my arm patting myself on the back.)

Good luck :)

gmcsewer 06-29-2013 10:23 AM

If you havae anything that is waste like papers, bags, boxes, get rid of that stuff first. That might make quite a dent in it. I feel for you as I have to be in the mood to organize so do it when the mood hits you or if it never happens, you will just have to grit your teeth and do some of it.

Put dinner in the crock pot before you start.

Pray for strength, safeth, perseverence, patience, LOVE.

Get yourself a wad of $1 bills. Set a timer for 1/2 hour. Note your progress and say nice things to yourself. Put $1 in a jar for a treat later.

First, get everything out of the new room. Vacumn, dust, touch-up paint. Get the floor the way you want.

Next, decide on your floor plan; what will you use and where will you put you tables, storage, design wall. Will the previous space still be yours? Then storage of fabric and books can stay in there.

Put the furniture into your room.

One space that is retreaved gold is the area above a closet door. If you have batting on a roll, it will hang from that space perfectly. Or some kind of bin that will hold batting packages. One BIG item off the floor.

Hang the design wall.

Decide on lighting needs and get that installed.

Now, start putting things away. As mentioned before, get a big box for "recycle at another address". Have another box for "I want this but don't know where to put it". Those two catagories will be out of the way so you don't keep picking them up.

Another thing mentioned is rewards. What is special to you? And you can afford? I can't afford eating candy, so if that's a reward, I feel guilty for another reason. So pick something that will make you feel better. A massage? A long soak in the bath? A glass of wine? A photo posted on QB? A phone call to a friend who will rejoice with you?
A large note on the design wall? Take a box of cast off's to ________? Dance a gig?

Set a time for a break and meals. Get a glass of water. Don't neglect R&R.

Be nice to yourself! Only positive words!

Take this list for what it's worth, my 2 cents.

My SIL said the thing I remember most, after our house had flooded and it had to be completely gutted down to the dirt floor in the crawl space. We didn't think we would ever get thru the rebuilding. So she asked "How do you eat an elephant?" I said I wouldn't know how (and thought why would you eat an elephant). And her answer was "One bite at a time."
So that's what we kept in mind and ended up with a beautiful home.
Good luck with your project (one bite at a time). There are lots of great suggestions here that I will use too!
