I am looking forward to destashing some fabric and reorganizing my sewing room. I like Rob’s suggestion that if it hasn’t been used in a year...get rid of it, donate or trash.

I am organizing my UFOs this week. I need to go through them to see what I have and put them all in one place so I can tackle them in 2019. I am actually quite nervous to count how many I have, but I will. 2019 is the year of the UFO for me!

rryder 11-29-2018 10:49 AM

Grinch-- don't forget about the UFO thread in the Challenges and Contests section here on QB. We have a lot of fun encouraging each other to finish UFOs and making sure there's lots of pats on the back for every single finish. Last year I managed to finish at least 1 UFO each month and some months I had more than 1 finish. This year I finished 1 each month up through Sept. then hit a snag with a UFO t-shirt quilt. I got it out of storage in late Sept. and have put most of the top together, but hit a snag when trying to decide between another row of t-shirt logos or borders all around to get it to the size it needs to be. I hope to have it finished by the end of the year.

Today I'm working with tiny scraps and turning them into scarves that I sell at a couple of galleries here in town. That helps some with the scraps.

I need to do a serious re-organizing of my combined office/sewing studio/guest bedroom as I'm being stymied/easily distracted by all the half-done stuff I've got laying around. I don't want to put my current projects away as they will then become more UFOs, but I find myself wasting time trying to decide which one to work on first, rather than just diving in and getting something done. I think I need an intermediate storage system where I can put those things that are in progress so they don't add to the visual clutter of my small work space....

nothing... I'm organizing nothing today. HA! I am trying to get all of clue 1 done for the BH Mystery quilt... and then I have some Christmas fabric that is screaming at me to make a supersized hst star quilt... So, I may listen to that pile of fabric and use some up.

Thank you! I will wander over there in a bit. I could benefit from that group!!

Grinch, I use the UFO thread to keep me working on a project so it doesn’t become a UFO. So far it’s been working. I’ve completed 6 quilts this year, each one started after Jan 1.

Two weeks ago I thought I must have a mouse in the kitchen. The little male cat, Buttons, began pointing to a specific drawer. I have a pointing cat, not a pointing dog. So I put some sticky traps in two places. And I got him, with Buttons's help.

So that prompted a complete cleanout of the kitchen. I paid my Amish neighbor to help clean, sort, and paint the shelves and drawers. It's so easy to care for now. Took about half of my stuff to donation place.

So on Monday the same wonderful lady is coming back and we are going to go through the books in the office. Lots of quilting patterns and books. I'm so looking forward to it. Big drawer on the left is where the mouse met his fate.

zozee 12-01-2018 07:13 PM

Battle Axe, sometimes it takes a mouse to jump-start (emphasis on jump) a deep-cleaning of the kitchen. I usually do it in January, regardless, but we've had a couple mice over the years at other times, and it just makes me crazy!

Glad your pointing kitty is so good at her job. I'm sure you were thrilled to have help cleaning, sorting, painting, donating, and are eager to keep up the momentum.

Battle Axe: I love the shine on the cabinets. I still have one of those Corning Ware dishes. :) I am glad you have a wonderful lady to help you with your tasks.

Me Too.... time to tackle a good pile of tops..

Cupboard cleaning...how cathartic! Looks so fresh, now. Hope no more little critters show up. I haven't had the pleasure of such visitors since we built our new house 11 years ago...but let me tell you about the ones I've caught over the years in the old farm house!

The only piece of cornflower corning I have left is a pie plate...originally had 2. I liked the small square ones for leftovers...great to put in the microwave.

At work today, a friend dropped off a big bag of waste triangles...I mean lots of small triangles...mostly in red and creams..will be great for my mini making...sorted them out a bit into piles...looks like I've got 3 reds and 3 creams to play with.

jmoore 12-02-2018 04:11 AM

Battle Axe, I certainly could use an Amish neighbor in my neck of the woods. LOL Your cabinets look great!. We have been overrun with mice this fall...we’ve trapped more than 50 (mostly in our basement) and 10 flying squirrels in our attic. We own a late 1700’s home on over 4 acres and we only live here in the winter...so the critters had the house to themselves all summer until we moved back in mid October. I have cleaned every nook and cranny possible.

rryder 12-02-2018 04:42 AM

Battleaxe! glad you found someone to help with the reorganizing- sounds like you are making great progress.

I’m trying to sew my way through some scraps by making scarves- they’re fun to do. I want to reorganize the pantry cabinet- the whole top shelf is filled with things that got put up there four years ago and haven’t been used since. And I am also seeing signs that a mouse has been exploring options for winter housing in my kitchen. It really hurts my heart to kill the little critters but I know I’ll have to get out the traps...

Rob, just checking in to see if you're feeling better. I hope so!

IrishgalfromNJ 12-03-2018 01:24 PM

I'm organizing the closet where I keep my play clothes and my holiday decorations. I bought three new big plastic bins to aid in this effort. I can't wait to get home from work to get started.

Grinch 12-03-2018 02:23 PM

Way to go, Battle Axe! The cabinets look great! Enjoy them and the new organization in the office!

Thanks, SusieQOH. I’m still not 100%, but am doing much better. Tests showed that my gall bladder is not working as is most likely the cause of the pain, so it’s coming out on Jan. 4. Until then I’m trying to be careful about what I eat- do not want to set off another attack!

Rob, glad to hear they know what is going on. You will feel so much better when they remove it. And I'm glad you're feeling better.

Okidoki.. got it

rryder 12-05-2018 03:37 AM

Today I am going to spend some time reclaiming the work surfaces in my office- they have somehow gotten completely buried under a layer of papers, books l have listed on eBay, books I am planning to list on eBay, info on quilt shows I plan to enter, various bits of mail that I couldn’t decide what to do with, etc. And I am going to look for something to donate, sell or trash- it shouldn’t be difficult ;)

After that I’m going to write a quilting/gift making/project to do list with task goals for each. I’m hoping that putting this info on paper rather than trying to keep it in my head will help me make decisions and actually get moving on some projects that have been stalled due to the pinball brain I get every time I look at everything that is in progress in my studio right now.

Rob: I hope you were able to get a lot accomplished today.

I am still working on getting my sewing areas reorganized. I feel I can sit down and sew some at least now. Lol!

Psychomomquilter 12-07-2018 03:30 AM

need to do the living room for one thing, start decorating, then backj to sewing room, still needs mega overhauling (nothing to throw away!! ) so to just get the material in some semblance of order. I never got to do those tubs someone mentioned, now I got 2 more so that is also what is being organized today!

KalamaQuilts 12-08-2018 07:21 AM

we had new carpet installed yesterday so when things go back they will all get a good wash/polish/sweep. Some might even get packed as we are house hunting.

For me this is an endless process! I hope to get all the pieces cut for a Qsized quilt. Thought I was going to get it all from stash, but ended up getting another 3 FQ's of neutrals to make the connecting blocks look right. Hope to have this done before Christmas. Wish me luck!

rryder 12-08-2018 11:29 AM

SusieQOH- thanks

Retiredteacher09- I did manage to get a lot done, including working on my list, uncovering my work surfaces, etc.

oksewglad- yes, organizing is an on-going project that I fear will never end in my case. Wishing you luck in getting the quilt done before Christmas!!!

rryder 12-19-2018 06:48 AM

Today I’m organizing my stash of Wrapping paper, ribbons and bows. Got a lot done yesterday- all the tissue paper is neatly stored in a labelled box and the wrapping saved from past years that is good enough to re-use (yes, I’m one of those) has been flattened and sorted into xmas, birthday and other categories. Today after I get back from the vet I’ll tackle thebox of tangled ribbon and bows.

more money for fabric LOL

PamelaOry 12-19-2018 09:21 AM

I’ve been bitten by the organizational bug. Hubby is going to put shelves in my closet for Christmas and I ordered some comic book boards and have started wrapping my fabric onto them. One thing I noticed is that after folding my fabric in half again (to 11” from 44”) it is still to big for the 10 1/2” boards. Anyone else have this issue? I bought the boards off amazon and got ones that had a ton of positive reviews from quilters saying they folded in 1/2 which ends up being 11”.

WANNABEE 12-19-2018 01:36 PM

Just keep the extra 1/2" - 1" on top.
