For newbies to this thread: jump right in with any organization tips you want to share, feel free to post pictures of your organization projects, offer supportive comments, etc. We’re a friendly bunch.

Today My organization goal is simple- I’m going to find 5 books that I am willing to part with and will donate them to the little free library across the street.

What are you organizing today?

Rob

Because I have RA, and the coinciding brain fog that goes with it, I tend to put things back where they belong so I can find them.

I also have the tendency to put things away before I'm done needing them so I have to, inevitably, get up to get them again...multiple times. Sigh

Julienm1 12-10-2020 04:20 AM

I was sewing with reckless abandon yesterday and into the night. Pulling fabric for more construction. Realized matching fabric using wrong basic fabric. So stopped working. Got up this morning to total chaos. Fabric pairs look good for different project. What did I do? Tidy up? NOPE. Cry? NOPE? Sigh? YES.

Left the sewing room. Made coffee. Grabbed a cookie, or two.

So I realize when I'm in the middle of the creation, I don't see the mess...until the next day when my brain has had a rest. I have to quit, SOMEDAY, making scrappy projects. No that will never happen...lol https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png

rryder 12-10-2020 01:53 PM

LOL Julienm1- I hear you. I just looked around my studio and realized that, once again, there are no available horizontal surfaces to work on, oops...https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png

Mcadwell- welcome to this thread!

Rob, I told my husband about your problem and he said what about the ceiling? Build a scaffold? Change your name to Michelangelo?

LOL! My ceiling’s not big enough to hold everything...

Spent a few hours yesterday listening to concerts and doing lots of organizing in sewing room. Even designated a WHO BOUGHT THIS box of stuff to get rid of. Made the bookshelf more functional. Folded baby quilts that need finishing touches.'
Came in this morning and noticed piles of fabric that I swear wasn't there last night. So instead of moving it/them into the fabric room, I measured/cut into usable sizes. Ordered plastic alligator clips for...whatever. (I know lots of you guys use them so I decided to join the party.) Found existing containers for my new-to-me precuts.

Oh and big accomplishment yesterday was rediscovering my precuts. Jelly rolls are so pretty.

Now I have to finally get dress and lunch. Then I will allow myself to work on 2nd Ugly Yesterday-Pretty Today quilt.

If kids leave early enough tonight maybe I can glue baste a quilt and then quilt it tomorrow. Better clear of a place for basting. Oh, I so dream for a larger room but then don't we all? https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/wink.png

Oh crap just found a drier full of fat quarters I zig zagged in pairs that now have to be separated and pressed. All these interruptions drive me nuts.

oksewglad 12-17-2020 09:10 PM

I feel my evening has been one interruption after another, too. Julie! Trying to get some bookwork done and have had one thing then another get in the way...still have bills to pay before I call it a night.

I got sidelined by a flu bug...finally felt good enough to do something today. I went through batting scraps and sewed long strips together. Have enough for a full sized quilt as well as a twin quilt...win win!

Teen 12-18-2020 06:33 PM

There is something about “after done cleaning” that gives such joy. I scrubbed my sewing room today..It’s sparkling clean and no piles or scraps anywhere. All cut up and put away... And, I found an antique glass measuring container in my kitchen cupboard I grabbed and is now where my scissors are placed. Looks so cute...lol... Why do you feel we need so many scissors? So, room is free to mess up again..lol..

Glad you are better, Ok!! At least it was just the flu...yikes..

Thanks, Teen...It really threw me for a loop, but happy to be on the mend...my boss was glad to see me back yesterday! she's very good about one staying home when you are sick..why make others sick? Of course she was extra busy while I was out.

I finally attached a scissors to my sewing machine! I was tired of having it walk off and me not finding it when I needed it. Lovely idea to use the measuring cup as a holder. Why so many scissors? I don't know, but they grow around here! I have inherited a couple of nice older ones. One is a lovely Sheffield (England) shears that cuts like a dream; the others are small scissors that I use often as well. I have developed a penchant for collecting old scissors now, but need to keep the family ones separate!

Julienm1 12-19-2020 06:51 AM

OKsewglad, I understand you problem regarding scissors with feet. Mine don't walk away but always falling on the floor. My sewing machine sits in the well of the sewing table and has a 6" space to the right of the machine. Perfect place to put my scissors. Right? Wong! I constantly would be knocking the scissors on the floor. Got mad. Stormed into the kitchen. Dug out small plastic food container. Stomped back to the sewing room. Grabbed the Gorilla Tape on the way. Placed roll of tape on bottom to container, stuck it in corner of the well, slid the machine to right to wedge that little sucker in place...WALAA. No more bending over several times a day retrieving scissors.
My favorite thread cutter at the machine is a kiddie Fiskars scissor I bought years ago at Back-to-school sale. Purple handle so usually easy to find if it jumps out of it's "house."

Julienm1 12-19-2020 07:00 AM

Oh and I use several sewing themed coffee mugs to store lots of sewing notions. 1x6 rulers, fabric markers, colored pencils, pens, dry erase markers, pens, pencils, Hera marker, etc. Just too pretty to drink from but lovely to look at.

I do the same with sewing/quilting mugs. So easy when items are handy.

Tall Hick = Wow, those are great bins. Nice job thinking outside of the box. And the crib sheet is a perfect choice to cover them up.

So much has changed here since I was last on and I forgot to 'link' tallchick's post.

I love the 3-tier tray. Would you mind sharing with me where you picked that up? My decor is farmhouse...all kinds of ideas for that...lol...just what I need...more crap. Lol..

Got my 5 big totes of fabric sorted by color, it looks like a fabric explosion in my room. A early morning run to Wally World tomorrow should help. I also have one huge tote full of fabric that will go to a gal who's daughter works at a senior center, she brings in crafty stuff for them to do.

Julie: I have that same small space to the right of my machine where I would keep all my stuff, at least until I knocked it to the floor!

Went to the Dollar Store and started my organizing efforts with a metal wreath holder. Bent it so so that the metal strip runs along that narrow strip, with the hook off to the side holding my small trash bucket. Used the metal strip to secure 2 for a $1 metal cups with magnets on the bottom. One cup is the perfect size for my tomato pin cushion. I use the other for my thread clippers. Added stick-on felt-pads (meant to protect floors from furniture) to protect the sharp tips from banging against metal. Another felt pad with a couple of pins stuck through in the other cup keeps the pin cushion from spinning. Then used poster putty to attach another plastic bucket for the miscellaneous stuff: purple thang and wooden presser. Small changes but it made me so happy.

Another great Dollar Store find was extra large plastic clothes pins. I use 2 (plus a couple of carabiner clips) to attach another mini-trash bucket to my ironing board, where I have a cutting mat. Another giant clothes pin holds the pillow case that covers my wool pressing mat vertical when I fold up the ironing board.

Wreath holder, 3 buckets for trash and scraps, 3 buckets for stuff and units in progress, felt protectors, magnetic cups, poster putty and large clothes pins: all from the Dollar Store. $7 well spent.

Yes, I also did the same with the lazy susan turntable, made by Rubbermaid at Walmart. Makes it so much easier while sitting at the sewing machine to just reach over & get what I need.

Teen 12-22-2020 10:31 AM

I’m definitely buying one and a lazy Susan . I really love it..... thank you, ladies!

I liked the wreath hanger so much that I bought another one while they were still "in season", as well as a larger magnetic cup. When you inlace the carabiner clips I forgot to add in the prior post, my total cost is $10.

Julienm1 12-22-2020 01:54 PM

Wow you are so SO creative!

Julienm1 12-23-2020 05:44 AM

Out of my mess I finally finished 3 Project Linus quilts. Wash/dried just need to check for more wayward threads. YEAH!!

Last night dug out a jelly roll for next quilt. Started cutting for Basket Case by Cluck Cluck Sew. https://www.fatquartershop.com/baske...All%20Products
It's basically a hash tag (pound sign) block. Finishes at 10" so I should be able to crank this out quickly.

jmoore 12-27-2020 04:42 AM

Very clever SuzSLO...thank you for sharing.

julienm1, that looks like a fun pattern. I have a couple of Cluck Cluck Sew patterns that I have done, I may have to add that one to my library.

I spent several hours purging and organizing in my sewing studio yesterday...it is my annual NYD project but I’m getting a head start this year since there is no place to go...
I replaced blades in my rotary cutters, soaked and cleaned two cutting mats and sorted through my crumb and strip bins to weed out unwanted items...”tired of looking at” pieces. Today I will refold some of my larger pieces that I pulled out for Christmas projects and put them back in their places by color. After I’m done putting everything back where it belongs I will sweep and mop my floor.

Julienm1 12-27-2020 05:16 AM

Working on my comic board organizing. I think I have more hunks and chunks of fabric than yardage. Have only 10 boards left, bought package of 100 on Amazon, so today will look at what was wrapped and add another short length to either top or bottom of board. I'm thinking some skinny boards just may have 3 colors wrapped.

rryder 12-27-2020 11:39 AM

Today and for the next several days I will be organizing my quilt storage. I have 3 labels printed out and ready to sew on to quilts. I also have a bolt of muslin and pool noodles ready to be turned into quilt storage. Today I will get the labels stitched down and hopefully will get a bit of a start making the coverings for the pool noodles and bags that they slip into on e the quilts are rolled around them. I’ve got 6 retired show quilts that I need to make these for, so it will take me a couple of days to get them finished.

I also want to have a rethink about where I actually store the quilts once they are wrapped around their pool noodles and slipped into their muslin bags. I’m hoping to find some space in the walk in closet, but that will require moving some of my paintings to another location...

Rob

I finished disassembling my Christmas and reorganized all my storage bins. I need to stop buying more crap for decor. I have plenty...just, each year, someone comes up with a cute idea...lol

Julienm1 12-27-2020 04:00 PM

Teen....so did you buy or make Gnomes? Inquiring minds need to know before bedtime!

Julienm1 12-30-2020 04:05 AM

Took a break from comic board folding and started a quilt for Project Linus. Now, ask me I dare you, did I take fab from my newly organized fabric? Nope! Decided to use Jelly Rolls that I don't like now and started making HST. This morning I discovered I forgot what a mess I make while starting a new project. Did take background fabric from a board though...lol Did take background fabric from a board though...lol

Goal is to sew on this quilt until Sat and then back to the tubs. Sewing is my reward for organizing well done...LOL

Oh I so could have written your message....I love thrift stores & repurposing and the creative ideas just take over....We must be strong lol
Because I had been tested for covid Christmas Eve day we had to delay our small gift exchange until this Thursday but you better believe by Friday evening Christmas decor will be back in storage-thankfully I didn't go hog wild & just put out a few items.
I did manage to move all the Accuquilt dies to a different more accessible location in my sewing room.
Hopefully, as I continue to get well my mojo comes back-crossing fingers.
You guys keep me motivated so keep posting, please.

Oops, I just bought a Christmas tree, and a bunch of decor for my 3-season porch. I 'needed' the extra tree and decor. lol

I now have an inside tree (Victorian with all handmade ornaments) and a new 'outside' Winter tree (all Tomte Gnomes).

I'll take down the inside Christmas tree over New Year's but plan on leaving the Winter tree up for awhile yet. We need the festive lights for the dreary months of January and February.

Julienm1 12-30-2020 11:33 AM

I think I maybe should have continued to go thru tubs rather than sewing for a couple days. I forgot how big of a mess I can create. OMG !!! https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/shock.png BUT when I walk into the fabric room and see all that fabric standing up, I feel so proud. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png
Have I mentioned when I found fab that had lots of yards, I fold around a comic board but when done folding, pulled the board out. These mini bolts stand up just fine nestled between other board-folded fabric.
