Susie--try this (since I know you're helping your mom rehab and there's not time for much else). Take a picture of your cutting table. Then get a box or sturdy plastic tote and clear off everything on your cutting table into it. Then take another picture of your cutting table. Voila! Instant progress! LOL. But seriously, after you clear stuff off into that sturdy box, take the box where you can sit near your mom and sort through it. Do what you can in increments--trash, donate, keep.

the best way to organize is to use up as much of the fabric you can, put things away when done.

[ATTACH=CONFIG]607993[/ATTACH]It's a bit hard to see the thread rack in this "before" photo. While it wasn't a mess, it wasn't functioning well for me. Half of the spools were either polyester, mixed, or for hand quilting.
None of those do I use often enough to keep close to my machine.

So I re-organized it. I put the seldom-used kinds of thread in a small drawer in the closet.

Then I arranged the machine quilting spools in a ROYGBIV-ly way (Red-Orange-Yellow-Green-Blue-Indigo-Violet/rainbow order). Colors on the left, neutrals on the right, partially wound bobbins in the middle.

I use neutral thread the most often, so it's closest to my machine. (The dark frame is simply an empty frame I found at the thrift store awhile back and like how it makes the colors pop.)
