I am making some table toppers using the Dresden plates. Doesnanyone know how to make the backing for them that fit the pattern exactly. I have been just sewing them onto a 20 inch square and I would like them to be just the circular pattern without the background square. Thanks for your help.

place your d.plate right side to the backing fabric, trace it, cut it out. Then with right sides together, backing and plate, sew 1/4" seam around it. Be careful to do the points or curve carefully. Pull right side out through the center hole, then hand stitch center circle on your place, hope this helps. Lace

Thank you so much. I have been watching all the sewing programs on PBS and they all stop at a certain point and don't tell how to do the backing. I am going to try that today. Again thank you.

I tried your suggestion. I very carefully traced the pattern onto my backing fabric and marked my beginning point on both front and back so that they would fit together right. I used a 1/4 inch seam allowance all the way around on the points and valleys. When I finished I turned it inside out and every single one of the valleys is puckered. What did I do wrong? Thank you for your patience.

clip each of the valleys to the seam but don't cut the seam, then turn it.

I believe you will need to turn wrong sides out again, and clip to the stitching on your valleys. Do not clip through the stitching.
