Does anyone have a Kindle or other ebook reader? If so, what do you like/dislike about the one you have? Can you download books from Amazon if you have any ebook or does it have to be a Kindle?
I'm just starting to look into these, so any advise is appreciated.

I have a nook color and I love it. I got my mom a nook and she loves it. We share alot of thebooks and there are so many free ones. I dont know alot about the Kindles but I do love my nook.

AskaGirl 05-06-2011 09:47 AM

I love my Kindle, no complaints here.

You get free 3G on it, so it's nice to be able to look something up (it has a web browser similar to a smart phone) if you're in the car or out somewhere. I don't have a fancy phone though, so maybe that's just a benefit to me. ;)

Also, Amazon has plans to make it so you can check out books from your library electronically. I think that feature is coming out this fall? I don't know if you'd be able to do that with other devices, but for me, that would be a HUGE benefit.

Hope this helps, good luck with your decision.

I have a Kindle and my hub has a Nook Color..now if he had gotten me the Nook first I might have been sold, But I wouldn't give up my Kindle. The only downside is there is no backlighting. The Nook has that. But Booklights are easy so its really not an issue..just not built in.

I have over 400 books on my Kindle...very few did I pay alot for. I am reading the Revenge of the Radioactive Woman...very funny. But most are free. Type in "Public Domain" in the search and it will bring up more than you can imagine. And on Amazon there are always free books to download. Good Luck in your search! =)

I want one too, so am bookmarking this so I can decide too.

Candace 05-06-2011 10:18 AM

I have one and I'm going to list in on ebay:< I received it as a Christmas gift and played with it and decided I simply LOVE the feel of books and would never use it. I guess I'm old fashioned!

Kappy 05-06-2011 10:31 AM

There was a link about this awhile ago, someone said you can go to your local library and they will assist you with adding something to your reader so you can download their books. Don't remember who it was, was going to bookmark it but of course didn't! When am I going to learn that I cannot trust my memory! LOL

Libraries serviced by Overdrive will be able to use Kindles for e-book check outs by September. Currently, Overdrive supports Nook, Ipods, Ipads, Iphones, Literati, Blackberry, etc. Actually, you could pretty much say Overdrive library service supports everything but Kindle right now.

If you are interested in using it with a library service, I would check localy before I invested. I'm sure other services exist even though Overdrive is the most popular.

As for the free books Amazon offers on Kindle, most if not all area available from the Gutenberg project for any e-reader or PC for that matter.

Kindle is great and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I get a few magazines/newspapers sent and plenty of books. Always something to read no matter my mood or how long I am having to wait somewhere. So far the no back lighting has't been an issue. I've had mine 3 years.

cmagee84 05-06-2011 12:38 PM

I just bought the Kindle last week and I love it! I never thought I would get one, but the convenience is wonderful. I will still read "real" books, so it does not totally replace books for me. I have not bought many books yet. I am watching for deals and bargains. I will still definitely use the library and look forward to Overdrive accepting the Kindle. You can also "borrow" books from other Kindle users. I am working on figuring that one out.

Good luck with your decision.

gzuslivz 05-06-2011 12:41 PM

I have a sony EReader. I love it, even though I am a very tactile person and love the feel of real books. I can get books from the library and have them for 21 days before they expire (no more late fines!) The Sony Reader store has thousands of books and even has free ones! If you want to get books from the library, check with them to see what readers are compatible with their system.

Raggiemom 05-06-2011 02:31 PM

I bought the Nook because you can borrow books from the library on it and you couldn't the Kindle. It's my understanding that I can only buy Nook books from B&N and Kindle books from amazon

SewMomma66 05-06-2011 07:18 PM

Love my Kindle and cannot wait until I can get my library books as well. For me that was the only drawback.

Love angels 05-06-2011 08:05 PM

I have the nook color and love it. You can download PDF files onto it too. I have a few craft books I have gotten for free. They just made it so we can have different apps on it too. So now we can download the kindle app and purchase those books too. I get mostly free books though.

kanakama 05-07-2011 03:44 AM

I've had a kindle for several months now and love it. One feature I love is that the battery lasts for a whole month!

hmarienc 05-07-2011 03:55 AM

I downloaded the free Kindle for PC onto my laptop. I love it. We just got a new Ipad and I downloaded the free Kindle to it and I can read books from either one. When I read from the laptop and bookmark it and then go to my IPad, it picks up where I bookmarked on the laptop. That's cool! I have downloaded a lot of the free books for Kindle and have had some very good reading.

There was a thread just a week or two on this that I'll bet can be found and you might find helpful.

I bought a Nook with 3G and WiFi a year ago and loved it. My DH got a NookColor for me for Christmas and I LOVE iT. The NC is touch screen and backlit so you can read in the dark. Other Nooks and the Kindle have to have a light source. My sister is borrowing my first Nook and she can read all of the books I have on it and any I add and vice versa, because I kept both Nooks on one acct. One account can have,I believe, 6 devices on it such as multiple ereaders, PC, I phone or I pad. I do most of my reading in bed at night it is perfect for that. And the download is free on the devices. Most importantly, if I have questions or problems I can go to a Barnes and Noble and talk to a human face-to-face. Our local B&N has a weekly forum/class for Nook users.

For those who want to download ebooks from your library, please check with the library first to make sure that they are set up for this service. I'm on the library board in a small town. We are going through the steps to get set up for downloading ebooks but it takes awhile.

lonestardreams 05-07-2011 06:08 AM

I have a Kindle and love it. I prefer reading on it though I still have many paper books. I have nearly 200 books on it and am able to take my library with me wherever I go. I also prefer reading without a backlight- It's easier on the eyes and if I want to read with a backlight, I can use my Blackberry or laptop. I rarely do that though. I have a Kindle cover that has a light in it and I love that too. It runs off of the Kindle battery so I don't need to worry about batteries for the light or a way to carry it. The battery life on the Kindle is excellent. I remember reading about the people that were stranded on that cruise ship last year- the IPads, laptops and mobile phones were quickly without power while those with Kindles were able to read the whole time they were stranded. There is a wonderful online board called Kindleboards for the best information anywhere.

We are a 3 Kindle family by the way.

Good luck.

With the IPAD 1 being sold at $300/350. and it does everything a Kindle or Nook does plus the web, email etc. Why pay $165.+ for a Nook or Kindle. I have both apps. on my IPAD, backlit, wi-fi, 16G. I can lay in bed at night and answer all of my emails, I charge it twice a week, because I use it alot. I couldn't live without it. My schedule and journal are on it plus pictures of all of my quilts. It's like a diary on steroids. LOL

caspharm 05-07-2011 06:31 AM

I have the nook and took it on a cruise. It was very nice. I still prefer real books, though my library has ebooks to lend that work on the Nook. I would like to buy a Nook color eventually.

I have a Kindle and wonder if you can only download lets say book from a library on the newer, more expensive models? I have the basic Kindle I received for Christmas and love it.

Hope this helps, good luck with your decision.

They just updated the Nook Color to be able to email and it already had web access. But you are right in that you can download the Nook program into an IPAD or your PC, or your
I Phone. Isn't technology amazing? I chose the Nook Color over an IPAD because I already had a library started with my original Nook and because of price difference.

i have a kindle.. love love love it

karenpatrick 05-07-2011 10:41 AM

I have a Nook. DH got it for me for Christmas. What I like about the Nook is, I can do all the downloading on my pc (which is larger and easier to see) and it magicly appears on my Nook. I like the touch screen on the Nook for reading but I'm old so I do all my searching for books, archiving books, etc. on my pc which also show up on my Nook. It's great. I thought I wouldn't like it as I like "real" books but I love it. It's small enough to take anywhere.

judyhh 05-07-2011 02:01 PM

where do you get the free ones? I have a nook also. I like it but I also love my books

texasannie 05-07-2011 02:50 PM

I have the Nook (not the color :( ) and I absolutely love it!

texasannie 05-07-2011 02:51 PM

I have the Nook (not the color :( ) and I absolutely love it! and no as far as I know you can only download from B&N

mshawii 05-07-2011 02:56 PM

I don't understand how to download from the library or Barnes and noble onto my Nook Color. What are the steps you go thru to do that? I have only downloaded at the store. I bought a WiFi for home but for some reason it won't except my email address or my password. Jan

hmarienc 05-07-2011 03:28 PM

I downloaded my free Kindle for PC from amazon.com. I also download their free ebooks. They have a lot to choose from.

I'm just starting to look into these, so any advise is appreciated.

I have had a Kindle for 2 years now. I download from Amazon and Audible.com, and will be able to use the library this fall. Lots to pick from. By the way...love, love, love my Kindle.

nursie76 05-07-2011 06:16 PM

I have the Nook Color and love it! I have been downloading library books regularly and have purchased very few. Also, Barnes and Noble has Free Fridays, when you can download a book for free (may not always be what you like though). They also have a ton of free books to download from their site.

KarenBarnes 05-07-2011 07:20 PM

My husband bought me a tablet computer put out by elocity and so far I love it! I can read books put out by Kindle, Nook and a few others I haven't even begun to look at! It has the smaller screen and this makes me really happy. I didn't want a big screen like the Ipad. There are many tablet computers coming out in the very near future so this will make for many choices! Good luck!

Love angels 05-07-2011 07:31 PM

I get books in pdf format from many sites. Since the nook color has pdf capabilities. I think the nook has it also.

My DH has the regular Nook and he can download books in PDF format.

VernaL 05-08-2011 05:24 AM

I have a Kindle and love it. There were a lot of messages about this on the Board a couple of weeks ago that you might want to check.

Grambi 05-08-2011 10:55 AM

I'm a little confused? Why would it be desirable to download books in PDF format. I guess, from what I've been reading here, my Nook and NookColor do that but why would I want to? Is there a benefit?

And to the people asking about free books. Books that are in the public domain (copyright expired, if I understand correctly) are available for free or at a nominal price. I think on the Nooks where you search for books and have the option of putting in a price range for your search, you put
0.00. Somebody already mentioned the Free Fridays.

And some asked how to download library books. I'm sure it depends on what program your library uses if there is more than one. But the library staff should be able to tell you what to do. My library doesn't have theirs up and running yet, but I have volunterred to be a "super-user" to help the patrons with learning how to use it.
