I will be traveling from Frankfort, KY to Memphis, TN next week. What attractions do I need to see? Of course there is Graceland. I noticed on TN website some bus tours around Memphis. Are these tours worth the money?What quilt/fabric shops are in the area? Any restaurants you recommend?

As someone commented previously, Memphis has one of the highest robbery and crime rates in the US. Do not take the bus tours as the clients are targeted. Memphis reports at least one murder a day.

The Memphis Zoo is a world class zoo. The Pink Palace is a hands-on museum that is very interesting. Beale Street is known for the Blues, restaurants and night clubs but also high crime and shootings.

Memphis has very few quilt shops. Bartlett has one, Klassy Kats, off of Stage Rd.

I moved from Memphis because of the extremely high crime rate. My mother, best friend and brother have all been robbed at gunpoint.

I agree with purplemem, be very careful, we vacationed there and had fun, but was very careful, looking around all the time..carry a fanny pack, stay in a crowd, etc..

there is the peabody hotel in downtown memphis,,it has ducks inside the lobby in the fountain,,very nice

Yes, that's what I recommend also. The ducks live up in a rooftop penthouse. In the a.m., a parade master puts them in the elevator which brings them down to the ground floor. They march out of the elevator on a red carpet, into the fountain, where they spend the day. Then, late afternoon, the procedure is reversed. It is darling to watch!

Quiltsmith's is in Cordova and the Quilting Barn is in Arlington. Both are excellent quilt shops. The one in Arlington is in the old town section of town and has fun shops all around. In addition to quilting we also have Mud Island, the metal museum, the fire museum, the Dixon Gallery, Lichterman Center, the Peabody Hotel with the parade of ducks, Brooks Museum of Art, National Civil Rights Museum, Stak Music Academy, and you can always have dinner on one of the riverboats with a short tour of the skyline from the middle of the mighty Mississippi, or head to the Rendevous for a barbeque dinner. If you gamble, we are not too far away from Tunica. I have lived here for over 25 years and while it is a high crime city I still venture out whenever I feel the need. However, that being said my favorite places to spend time are Hancock Fabrics, Joann's, Hobby Lobby, and Michael's. Yes I am a fabriholic.

Good for you!! I just returned from Memphis in September. I visited Graceland, but...also went to the Rock N Soul Museum (which I enjoyed immensely as I play and sing), Beale Street, Stax Museum of Soul, and Sun Records Studio. I visited all during daytime hours and had no problems. However, be wise. The evening hours are more dangerous (but, then again, where isn't it?). I used a fanny pack in my sojourns, did all my visiting in daytime hours and had a hi-ho good old time. Plan on one whole day at the Graceland complex if you liked Elvis - lots of memories there. I spent one day on Beale - just walking back and forth, enjoying the music - it's everywhere! Have a good time and be safe.

I have lived in Arlington for 30 years and I love the Quilt barn in arlington it is closed on Mondays and sundays but open all other days until 5:00. I dont work there but I think I live there.I have a son that works across from the Fed Ex forum. on beale st he loves the night life down on beale
