Hi Quilters, at the end of August I will be visiting Iowa. The area around Ames, Colo, Des Moines and Nevada. Can you give me the names of some fabric shops? Is there a Marshall's Dry good store nearby? Will be out there for four nights. Maybe I will see some of you.

Thanks,

I am in South Dakota, so don't have much info, just wondering if you would like to bring my baby sister from Charlotte, NC? Just teasing. Have a good trip. Jackie

Ok, here goes. My favorites in the Ames, Des Moines area are the Quilting Connection in Ames, Cross Creek Quilting in Clive and The Quilt Block in West Des Moines. Not sure about some of the other areas you mentioned. Others will come thru with shops in those areas I'm sure! No Marshalls, sorry!

I would guess she meant Nevada, Iowa. You would not have known that. But I'll keep these shops in mind for my next trip out west!!! I'm keeping a running list. :-D

Fons and Porter is just west of Des Moines. If you have time you might want to check that out.

North on I-35 and west on 20 to Iowa Falls Iowa. About 45 min.
Up 65 from Colo straight to Iowa Falls.About the same time either way.
You will not find a better fabric shop any where. Quality fabric.
My friend from Mn. comes here to go to the shop.
The Iowa Falls Sewing on Washington ave.

They have wonderful reproduction fabrics I use for the doll clothes and doll quilts I make.

Fons & Porter are in Winterset, which is east, not west, of Des Moines. And if you SHOULD happen to be in the Amana Colonies, there are some. Don't remember all of the names other Fern's Antiques & Quilts. Ask anyone there. They will know.

Just so, you don't go in the wrong direction----Winterset, Iowa is Southwest of Des Moines, Ia. It's a beautifull town and has all those covered bridges besides Fons and Porter. Worth the trip. :D

I just got back from Iowa, 7/26/10 after spending 2 weeks there. Cedar Rapids has 2, one is in a deserted shopping mall with only a few large department stores and the other one is a really nice one which has a lot of stuff. I'm at work so I dont' remember the names. I also went to Winterset where the Fons and Porter shop is there. They have a quilt show on Sunday afternoon here in California. Also in Winterset is a the house where John Wayne was born. Winterset is in Madison County where there filmed Bridges of Madison County. If you want to send me a private message, I can look up other places I plotted to go to in Iowa but didn't get a chance.
