I like the cut out corners also. You are correct it's his quilt so go with it. I was making a quilt and my husband expressed definite ideas on the rights and wrongs at every aspect of the quilt. When it was finally completed, I handed it to him and said it's yours. He was delighted. Life sometimes gets in the way of what WE think it should go. 10 years is just a flash in the pan. It got done and that's all that matters.
