I bought this antique quilt top on ebay a while back for a song. It is all hand pieced from what looks like feed sack material. Isn't it beautiful! It also came with a dozen orphan blocks and various pieces. The top is about 92 x 78.

Now, I could hand quilt it myself, but I know that even if I started it, I would never complete it. Too many other things to do. So kwhite, who lives in Amish country is going to find someone to quilt it for me by hand. I considered (briefly) machine quilting it, reasoning that either I do that or someday someone will sell the same unfinished top on ebay when I'm dead. But dear k came to the rescue. It's too beautiful not to finish, and while I'm not one of those who think that only hand quilted pieces can be called true quilts, I just couldn't bring myself to machine quilt this.

That is so beautiful!! I love how the green between the blocks almost makes it look like lace. You're going to have such a treasure when it's done, and such a tribute to whoever made it!!! :D

Wow, someone put a lot of work into this. You'll have a treasure when it's quilted. What are you going to do with those orphan blocks?

OMG - that's beautiful and you want to hear something amazingly coincidental? I have a very similar one I bought at auction years ago. I, too, want mine handquilted. Maybe you'll pass on the info from KWhite to me? That would be wonderful!

Beautiful. I'm a believer in hand quilting hand piece top. I'm glad you are having that done.

Good idea! Around here the hand stitching is quick and inconsistent with some--not all, of course. So, research well.

I once had a boyfriend whose grandmother made that pattern for us--but we never even got to the engagement phase. I used to visit her and watch her quilt. My mother told me years later that she asked the grandmother if she would sell the quilt to her to give to me, but she wouldn't go for it. I did get a pillow though. :D

It's lovely!

Simple quilting for this, but if the Amish quilt it for you, leave it up to them. They will know just what to do with it.
