Yeah, I've started cutting and I have 512 black squares that are 1.5". The quilt will be 87" x 87" and maybe I'll put a black border on it. Do a google for Menger sponge. You'll see tons of them! I had never heard of it either till my daughter sent me to some websites to look at them.

Wow, I'd hate to fiddle with all these tiny pieces. I'm sure it's going to look fantastic. Hope you don't mind, if I have one suggestion regarding the design. I'd add the attic window bits also to the big "hole"/square in the middle to emphasize the 3D effect.

I don't know what the sponge is either, but I love the quilt. Wonderful of you to do it for her!
