I take a piece of the fabric and lite it with a match, over the sink, and if it melts it has polyester or nylon in it, if it just burns, it is cotton...at least that is what a quilt teacher told us in a class once upon a time. It is amazing how quickly the poly will melt...scary!

I did not know how to test for cotton. Thanks for the info. Now the trick will be to remember the tip.
