I used this pattern and tutorial:

However, instead of having them "floating" I didn't add the bottom piece and instead cut a 1.5" sashing to look like a bookcase shelf and then added a 2.5" border all the way around to look like the outside of the bookcase.

FANTASTIC!!! I just love this quilt! I hope to make some jar quilts--canning jar, bug jars and candy jars. Your grandson is getting a gorgeous quilt!
