How adorable! I would personally just outline the chicks...and stitch in the ditch the squares.

Love your chickens! I am a fn of chickens also and done a quilt with embroidered chikens. Now that Christmas is over and gift making is done I wnat to do some fun things like that. Gteat job!

I would outline the chickens & stitch in the ditch & then I would start at the chicken & do a few very random arc lines resembling a loose feather to anchor the background.

You can echo quilt it and stop at your borders. That should give it enough motion to be fun
