Grannies Feedsack Quilt
#1
This is my Grannies quilt made about 80 years ago. The back is made from actual feedsacks. The sacks were washed in the old black pot outside with homemade lye soap. That stuff took the color out, made it soft and killed any bugs that was close by. If you look closely you can see the calves and the words calf developer on the sack. Grannie had 11 children and tons of grandkids. Im thankful that I was able to have one of her quilts passed down to me by my Dad.
Grannie lived in farming country of south Ga. Twice a year all the ladys came to Grannies to quilt their tops. Some quilted and 2 would cook . All the husbands had to be fed. They came every day until all the tops were finished. Thats the story of my Grannie.

What a treasure! After my Mom died, we found 6 quilts my great-grandmother made (some from the flowered flour sacks) that no one else valued so I've got them and am keeping them all for future generations. No labels on any of them but I am labeling them with what info I can (her name, birth & death dates, location) so when I'm gone someone will know where they came from. Please think about labeling your grandma's quilt so her legacy isn't lost.

what an awesome thing to have. I often wonder where I got my desire to quilt from. I have a quilt my aunt made for me as a wedding gift some 30 years ago and she never labeled it either. I know where it came from and now she is gone and I never thought to ask her more information on the quilt. I haven't been putting labels on my quilts and reading here I sure see the importance of it for future generations. I still hate to do it.
