This may not be the best way, but it's the way I did mine.

LONE STAR TUTE
size of finished star 42"

Step 1

Cut strips 2-1/4" wide by 42" long and sew together, insetting each color 2 inches to look like a stair (I used 9 fabrics). Press seams open.

Step 2

Cut strips 2-1/4" wide at a 45 degree angle.

Step 3

I used my beige flowered fabric as a guide for the center of the diamond and counted 5 across. From there up and down, I removed the rest of the of 2-1/4 squares I didn't need, and this formed my diamond shape.

Step 4

Sew the strips together and press seams open. Make 8 of these.

Step 5

Once you have your diamond shape, sew the diamonds together. I started at the center.

I always hand baste the centers before sewing down because they get so bulky. Since you are joining some parts on the bias edges, you can have some stretching - I think that is the buckling babeegirl was talking about.

Also, do not let your eyes fool you when working with the diamonds - in order for them to join properly in front, they will look offset at the edge. Maybe I am the only one who has had the feeling it did'nt seem right, then resorted to pinning and basting until I learned better.

Good job!

Thanks moonpi for the advise, I noticed that too, but mine doesn't pucker too much. It did the 1st time, but I restitched it.

insetting each color 2 inches to look like a stair
What does that mean--insetting? How is it different from just sewing the strips together?
