I found this pattern at McCall Quilting, while similar it is not the same. But the star could be done in a scrappy pattern.

This pattern was used as a mystery quilt project in our guild...they called it a Mexican Cross.

Many thanks for your input. This was my first time posting a question on this board and was really surprised at all of the responses. I am going to spend the next couple of days thinking about your ideas before I start anything. I do like the idea of echo quilting the star and possibly using a heart in the squares...or yes, I could do a grid because that sounds doable on a domestic machine. Or, the pumpkin seed quilting design sounds like something I could handle. Oh...decisions, decisions....for " Mexican Cross" quilt.
