I filled the washing machine with hot water. then dumped in a bottle of Tan Rit Dye and two cups of salt and mixed it well to disolve the salt (big long spoon). Then put in the quilt and set the machine to wash on the longest setting (16 minutes on mine), I reset the wash setting twice so it stayed in the dye for 30 minutes. Then let the machine finish the rinse and I dried it on cotton in the dryer.

Great way to "age" a quilt. I saw a magazine article once where they used the tan Rit dye to age ticking fabric. Also they used bleach on some ticking to get a vintage look.

You were very brave to do this to a quilt! Glad to know that this works.

That is so neat! I love the way it toned the colors down, just a bit, but they are still bright. Know he will love it.

I think that is a great idea. I've heard of giving fabric a tea-bath but think this would work much better. ♥
