One of the ladies recently shared her puff quilt and asked to see a photo and template of my biscuit quilts so here they are. The white one is a queen size that is about 2 inches too narrow for our deep mattress but it fits our guest room bed perfectly. Originally I found the idea and hexagon template in a magazine way back when. The date on the queen quilt is 1987-1990 but it sure seemed like I was sewing those little biscuits for a long time. The throw is made up biscuits leftover from the queen quilt. As a hand quilter, I prefer to use polyester batting and back then was using high loft as we had cold winters in IL. A few years ago I switched to low loft and it works just fine too. The reason I switched was my husband had a thyroid issue and the weight of my quilts really bothered his legs. Not it's no longer an issue but I found that I like working with the low loft batting and they are nice and warm as well.

I used scraps for the throw quilt.
1. using the template, you trace and cut each piece of fabric and and batting adding 1/4 inch seam line to each.
2. Sandwich with fabric right sides together and batting on top or bottom, however you prefer - yes I did sew the batting into the seams.
3. Sew the sides but leave one side open to turn the piece right side out and then hand sew that end closed.
4. I stored them in a laundry basket until I had enough to work with and then I put them together.
5. In the meantime, I was working on another queen sized quilt.

Sounds like a fun way to take care of some leftovers! I'm guessing that you then hand sew these completed "biscuits" together? Thanks for sharing!

Do you hand stitch the biscuits together?

Thank you. They really are fun to make. I worked on these while working on other queen sized quilts and made the little biscuits using left over fabrics from previous quilts as well as the ones I was working on. You don't have to make them into those big flowers like I did - have no clue what possessed me to do that. You could use any layout you can come up with. Hope you give it a try. This would be a good one to get a child started working on. They'd learn to cut, get comfortable with seaming and would see accomplishment after each session. It would even make a cute doll quilt if you have girls who are into dolls. My daughter and granddaughters weren't which is strange since I loved my dolls. Different generations.

It is a fun way and any color combination works. You could have sew scraps together and then cut with the hexagonal ruler for an even more fun look - mix it around.

Yes, I did hand sew them together but I think they could be machine sewn if preferred. I enjoy hand sewing and wanted to do them in the living room while keeping my hubby company. On the machine, I wouldn't even be on the same level with him and quality time together is important as is family time. I'd say try it both ways and see what you like the best and do that.

Hi Marilyn and thank you. Oh there are so many patterns out there that there is no way any of us can ever quilt everything we'd like to. Darn. LOL.
