OK..here is an update on info...the ribbon that to me is like a Mourning ribbon, could be that, OR a Campaign ribbon!
Here is what I found on Chester I. Long!

AND the ribbon above it, also a campaign ribbon! Apparently Simpson and Lewelling campaigned to "REDEEM" KS at the turn of the century!

How fascinating is all of this?? From little piece of patchwork!

What a treasure you have. Crazy quilts were my first love and really got me intereste in quilting. There are some great ones at Pioneer Village in Minden Nebraska.

I'm fascinated by all the fancy stitches holding the pieces together!
Some museum might be interested in that quilt, and certainly there will be someone who can advise you on how to clean, care for and store it.

The horseshoe & rider's crop could indicate another interest of the Quilter's or maybe something else. It could be the brand of a KS ranch or during the Civil War Kentucky was a divided state. Many of the horse farms sent their racing throughbreds, studs and brood mares West to keep them out of the hands of both armies. Kansas was one of those destinations. Could be an old racing silks insignia.

An amazing crazy quilt. Having roots is KS, the history is intriguing.
