I wouldn't exactly call it a technique. I cut the big tree shape out of paper and traced a couple of them onto fabric. I filled them with FMQ, then I cut the tree pattern down and traced a couple of smaller trees and filled them with FMQ. Then it was just a matter of making the swirling snow drifts. The bare trees were an afterthought, but they needed no tracing. Then I added stars to the background. It really was just a whim that grew.
