Default "Bali Cats" pieced and quilted by feline fanatic

I pieced this quilt a couple of years ago and it has been languishing in my to be quilted pile waiting for inspiration. When I put the pieced border on, I knew I had issues and thought I could get away with it. But when I pulled this out to quilt it, I had to take off both the borders and redo them. Then I decided to starch the sawtooth border before reattaching and some of it bled. But I think it will come out in the wash. Even if it doesn't the bleed is in such a small area it doesn't detract. And it finished much better and made quilting a TON easier.

Originally I made this quilt for myself. Then my most wonderful vet had a horrible fire over the holidays and lost all her pets (3 cats and 1 dog) to smoke inhalation. Thankfully her and her human family were ok and only the kitchen was trashed in the fire and smoke damage on all her belongings. I knew as soon as I found out that I would quilt this up for her.

Because all the cats are batiks I dubbed this quilt Bali Cats (a play on Alley cats). I knew I wanted them sitting in an Indonesian Garden but was at a loss as to how to make that happen. So I played with ideas and searched the net for inspiration. Then I stumbled on this stencil set by Urban Elementz and knew this is exactly what I needed to design the quilting.

I didn't use the stencils but drafted the designs myself and marked the flowers, leaves, hummingbirds and geckos. Then just freehanded the fill.

    Tech details:
Pattern: Sawtooth Cats by The City Stitcher
    Batting: Hobbs Polydown
Threads: Magnaglide bobbin in Tuscan color and Isacord in a tan color on top
    Quilting hours: 20

Here is the quilt before any quilting

    Here it is after:

I duplicated the pieced cats in the cornerstones of the outside border (you can see a little bit of the bleed in the tan fabric.

Some close ups of the quilting.

Now I just need to bind it and label it.

    Wowsers! Beautiful colors and quilting.
I've had this pattern for a long time and have not had the nerve to start it.
Good for you for finishing it and what a wonderful thing to do for the vet.

Now I am in tears ~ that is such an awesome quilt. Prayers of thanks for you for such a wonderful gift for your vet and prayers of comfort for the family on the loss of their furbabies.

Fantastic!! Love the quilt pattern and your quilting is just purrfect! ;-). Great idea for the quilting motifs and accents on the cats. Love it! I'm sure your vet will be over the moon with your thoughtful gift.
