I haven't tried this but I have read that, if you choose not to repair it, put a piece of netting over the part that needs it and it will help keep it together. I would certainly do something to preserve it.

What a wonderful friend and a great story to go with your quilt. Please repair to keep that piece of history from further damage.

YES!!! Repair, repair, repair. Without repairs it will continue to deteriorate and fall apart. Repaired it will last a long, long time. No question....repair!!! It's a beautiful quilt, and it deserves to live long & prosper!!! :-)

It is a beautiful quilt and I would repair it so it could be used, but it probably won't be considered an antique anymore. You have to decide what is more important.

I love how they did the ruffling, it's really a beautiful quilt! :)

Well, I have finally made my decision - I want to be able to use this because it has so many wonderful memories....and so I will eventually attempt to find ways of repairing - there are a couple of of places int he back that needs to be repaired but I have to be careful on how I do that since I have no extra sugar sacks from Cuba :-)..I may have to wait and go back to Cuba next year and bring one back.... :-)
But for the front, I can find ways of doing that.....especially since the majority of what needs to be done on the front is really to resew the strips...a couple of repairs for holes but nothing serious....I think that this will be a great project to work on!!!
I am so glad that you all checked in and gave me your advice....
Bill
