I started this quilt in 1976 as a present for my mother. I had no idea how to go about tackling such a project so I read several books until I found one that seemed to be the most helpful: The Standard Book of Quilt Making and Collecting by Marguerite Ickis (1949). From there I learned how to select fabric, make templates, and so on. For my pattern, I used a 2" x 2" picture of the Le Moyne Star and drew a grid to enlarge it to the size I wanted. From there, I created the templates for each section of the block. The quilt is totally hand pieced and hand quilted, using quilting designs I purchased from Mountain Mist. I used cotton balls and corn starch to mark the colored pieces and nutmeg for the white pieces. I now can see the many flaws due to lack of experience, but I am still extremely proud of it. My mother was too when she finally received it a few years later.

I have made a few quilts since then and am now an addict.

The whole quilt draped over my fence

I love your basket quilting design. Was that hard to do?

For a first quilt, that's pretty amazing -- and, of course, Red, White, and Blue!!! Wonderful!
