Default My first quilt

This is my first quilt, finished a couple of weeks ago for my husband's aunt and uncle, who are having a baby in November! Some of the pictures are sideways or upsidedown - I'm sorry about that, I don't know how to fix them!!

I admit that I didn't really go about this the right way - I found the adorable Penguin & Fish embroidery patterns, and wanted to do something using those. I embroidered the little squares, then picked some safari-colored fabrics and designed everything else around that. After I'd starting putting this together, I started reading quilting blogs and books, and it turns out that I didn't design or piece it in a very traditional way!! I arranged the blocks in a random scattered pattern, and I think I would have preferred a more organized layout. I'm pretty hooked though - having so much fun!

I absolutely disagree. I think the random nature of the diagonal strips really adds to the character of the quilt. It may not work in other instances, but I think it does here. It was hard to tell from the photos, but was the sashing between the blocks a strip of 'cheater' fabric or did you piece it from the 5 fabrics.

In any event, it will be greatly loved.

Thanks, everyone!!

Stormwater, the sashing is pieced from 5 fabrics. I thought I was being super clever when I came up with that - little did I know that strip piecing is a pretty common technique
