You are right, you probably have never seen one like it. I did see an antique one on the Illinois State Museum website that was made in a similar fashion.
I love doing hexis but didn't want a Grandmother's Flower Garden and this is my result. My GFG is still in a box as a UFO, and probably will remain such for a long time, I love the colors and fabrics - just not the design. Maybe I should take them apart and do something not GFG! ;0

That is the most unique and beautiful hex quilt I have ever seen! I've wanted to do one for some time but didn't want the usual GFG. You have nailed the most UNIQUE way to piece it that I have ever seen....absolutely stunning!
