I agree with the red and white borders to make it bigger.

You are doing a very good job. Yes, add borders. I think I would go red, white (or greyish) then red. These do not have to be the same fabric, merely complement it. Be careful with the red. It is easy to get reds that really clash. You could also add a very thin inner border or a flange of black. (A flange is a folded, pressed, cloth inserted into the seam. You could use a strip that is anywhere from 1" to 2" wide. It is usually pressed towards the body of the quilt.)

To make it christmasy looking you could use a green to frame it and the use the red.

What about doing larger borders? Or would that look awfull?

I eventually wanna make it big enoug for a queen size bed.
