In another thread I had asked for quilt patterns for orchids and was encouraged to get creative and do my own "pattern".

I did a test block today. The lighting isn't great for the photo. But, you get the idea. I still need to stitch it down when my machine gets out of the shop :x I plan on doing a satin stitch in a matching color rayon thread. This one is a cattleya, the next will be a lady slipper(paphiopedilum). I think I'd prefer a black background but the black shows through the lighter colored fabric.

I forgot to add, I'm doing this only from scrap fabric.

OOOH I love how you did the turn in the leaf. I think you came up with a much better pattern on your own! I know orchid flowers aren't big enough but I remember in a quilting mag years and years ago there was a contest winner of a Christmas quilt. It was applique of poinsetta's. The quilter had actually taken poinsetta leaves and petals to create her applique patterns. This is what yours reminds me of, cept you did it freehand.

No, this is a cattleya. Thanks for all the comments. It will look much different once it's got thread on it:>

You don't need patterns if you can create like this - it is beautiful.
